Presenting the 2010 Texas Tech University Ceramics Symposium – New Visions in Vitrified Clay during the 2010 Clay on the Wall exhibition is an excellent opportunity for us to focus our attention on current ideas in the ceramics field. Regional Expressions in Vitrified Clay is an opportunity to gather in one place the work of ceramics colleagues from around the state and neighboring states’ academic programs. This exhibition serves to complement and extend the Symposium conversation about trends and ideas in contemporary ceramics.

While Regional Expressions only presents work by selected artists working in the academic context, this is a position we can support because the next generation of ceramic artists first comes in contact with the varied discourses in contemporary ceramics through academic programs, the annual NCECA conference, and academic symposia such as the 2010 TTU Ceramics Symposium.

We are also delighted to include artworks by Symposium artists/speakers, Cameron Crawford of California State University-Chico, Ovidio Giberga of the University of Texas – San Antonio, and Jamie Walker of the University of Washington, Seattle. Including their work extends the discourse into a national context, augmenting the findings provided by the Clay on the Wall exhibition.

Special thanks go to Juan Granados, Associate Professor in Art, and Von Venhuizen, Associate Professor in Art, for their assistance in presenting this Symposium. Extra special thanks go to the Helen Jones Foundation of Lubbock for providing a very generous grant in support of the 2010 Ceramics Symposium and this exhibition.
