Alumni Notes [Fall 2008]

PIOTR CHIZINSKI (2007 BFA Sculpture), DAMON RAYDER RICHARDS (2001 BFA Painting), SUE ANN RISCHE (1994 BFA Jewelry Design + Metalsmithing), and JOHNATHAN WHITFILL (2006 MFA Sculpture) will exhibit Innovation by Limitation, an exhibition of painting, sculpture, casting, found object sculpture, metal fabrication, installation, and mixed media at Naü-haus Art Space in Houston from December 6, 2008 – January 4, 2009. Richards, Whitfill and Chizinski have a history of collaboration, as the group created a mobile art gallery named “Ryder Jon Piotrs Nomadic Gallery“, that has shown 14 times across the state.

PIOTR CHIZINSKI (2007 BFA Sculpture/Photography, Lubbock) currently has photographs on display at both the Houston Center for Photography and Houston FotoFest through January 10th. For this group exhibition titled, Viewfinder: New Images from Texas Artists, Chizinski presents digitally stitched photo collages of friend´s homes layered with schemata that describe and quantify the owner´s various possessions. Using a social theory formula (Stuart Social Status Scale) developed by sociologist F. Stuart Chapin in the 1930s, and modified by modern theorists, the spaces and, subsequently the inhabitants, are distilled to a number indicating their social class standing. Objects such as original works of art are additive while others like a makeshift card table/dining table are subtractive.

TIFFANY NAYLOR (2006 BFA Communication Design, Dallas) announces that she is with Fource Communications in Dallas.

RANDALL REID (1981 MFA Drawing + Painting, San Marcos) collaborates with designer Michelle Hays in an exhibition of thirty of Reid’s new sculptural paintings will be exhibited at St. Edward’s University in Austin (opening Friday, September 19th). Graphic designer Michelle Hays has explored the layers-physical and metaphorical-in Reid’s works, and has created a visual, tactile, and interactive book reflecting the artist’s process. Through this project Hays hopes to demonstrate the possibilities of interplay among the layers of process, materials, form, senses, text, and imagery. Erina Duganne, art historian and writer, lends some of her writings on Reid’s works to the exhibition.

JOHN ROOF (1974 BFA Painting, Staples, TX) has one of his paintings published in issue #35 of American Art Collector magazine.

JEANNE STURDEVANT (1967 BS in Applied Arts and Home Economics, MS in Education and Science, Dallas) will have a one person exhibit, titled Layered Journeys at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas, opening on December 6th through January 3, 2009.
