School of Art Announces Laptop Initiative
In response to the growing demands of computer technology in the arts, the Texas Tech University School of Art is pleased to announce its Laptop Initiative. Starting in the Spring 2008 semester, School of Art students will have the opportunity to purchase significantly reduced-cost laptops and software. The initiative begins with a 50-unit pilot release limited to Communication Design, Studio Arts Photography, and Visual Studies majors in January 2008, and is designed to eventually help all School of Art majors offset the growing cost of education while maintaining the highest possible professional standards in technology resources.
After much consideration, the Apple Macbook has been selected for its reputation in the industry and its “better bang-to-buck ratio.” All units purchased under the initiative will include the following minimum specifications:
· 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
· 1GB (2x512) 667 DDR2 SDRAM
· 80GB Serial ATA drive
· 6x slot-loading SuperDrive
· Airport Extreme Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR
Initiative laptops will also carry the AppleCare Protection Plan for hardware concerns as well as the services of School of Art and University Information Technology staff for troubleshooting, software support, and hardware repairs onsite when possible. Software was also a key concern for the taskforce members. Therefore, fully licensed, reduced-cost copies of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium will be required and will also be made available through the initiative.
The School of Art Laptop Initiative Taskforce is working with university officials and local vendors to make an affordable-yet-appropriate option available for all students. Not only will the cost be reduced, but students will also be able to include purchases made under this initiative in the estimated cost of attendance for Financial Aid consideration. As with all such programs, details are still being negotiated to ensure the best price for students, so the final cost of the purchase and the location for offsite service will be finalized sometime this Fall semester.
