Jiawei Gong (MFA)
Assistant Professor in Digital/Transmedia Arts
Born and raised in China, Jiawei Gong has received a BFA degree (painting & drawing) from China National Academy of Fine Arts in 1992 and an MFA degree (Digital Media) from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2007. In the past 20 years, he has worked as a video production artist, a newspaper art editor and press photographer, a freelance illustrator, a graphic designer, and a college art professor. With an influence of traditional Chinese philosophy and literature, Gong’s current studio practice focuses on combining both fundamental human experiences and contemporary social issues through the media use of installation, performance, digital video, sound, photography, and interactive web art. Gong’s exhibition record to date (2013) includes over 40 group and solo exhibitions regionally, nationally and internationally in the U.S., Europe and China.
