Dr. Steele’s research interests focus upon painting in Venice during the 16th century and in critical methodology as related to art and culture.  Recent work explores issues of sexuality, artistry, and imaginative vision in later works by Titian, by the 17th-century Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, and, now, by the contemporary American artist, Kiki Smith.  Dr. Steele also serves as Associate Dean of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of the Fine Arts Doctoral Program.  During fall 2006 he organized the international conference and recital series “Schumann Perspectives: A View Across the Disciplines."
