Graduate level course offerings
ARTH 5305. Topics in Art History (3:3:0). Topics will include Ancient Mediterranean Art, Art of Borders and Contact Zones, the Art of the Book, and other advanced research topics on a rotational basis. The course may be repeated for credit with change of topic.
ARTH 5308. Art Theory and Criticism (3:3:0). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Examination of art works from antiquity to the early twentieth century using a variety of traditional and current artistic theories, critical models, and methodologies.
ARTH 5309. Theories of Contemporary Art (3:3:0). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Advanced survey of contemporary art theory and critical methods, with emphasis on the impact of the post-structuralist critique of representation.
ARTH 5320. Arts of Medieval Europe (3:3:0). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Multiple critical, theoretical, and historical approaches to the art and architecture of Medieval Europe. Recent topics: The Late Medieval City in Italy; Construction of Meaning in Late Medieval Italian Art. Repeatable for credit with change of topic.
ARTH 5335. Arts of the Indian Americas (3:3:0). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Examines art, culture, and architecture of North, Central, or South American Indians. Recent topics: Mesoamerican Creation Stories; Art of the Olmec; The Ceremonial Landscape in the Aztec City; The Body and the City in Mesoamerica; Mesoamerican Codices, Gender in Mesoamerican Art; Maya Art and Ritual. Repeatable for credit with change of topic.
ARTH 5340. Renaissance and Baroque Art (3:3:0). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Examination focusing upon major developments in Renaissance or Baroque painting, sculpture, architecture, and art criticism. Repeatable for credit with change of topic.
ARTH 5363. 18th and 19th Century Art (3:3:0). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Principal developments in 18th and 19th century painting, sculpture, and architecture. Recent topics: Black Atlantic: Art and Global Empire; Spectacle and Modernity: Art in France and England; Picturing Empire: Art of the United States; Prehistories of Posthumanism. Repeatable for credit with change of topic.
ARTH 5382. 20th-Century Visual Art (3:3:0). An examination of major developments in 20th-century painting, sculpture, graphic, and ceramic art. Recent topics: Art and Globalization 1980 - 2000; Contemporary Art in the Middle East; Picasso and Matisse; Art Deco. Repeatable for credit with change of topic.
ART 5340. Transdisciplinary Approaches to Issues in the Arts (3:3:0). Instructors from two disciplines encourage the production of new knowledge and solutions by approaching a challenging issue or topic in art from multiple critical, theoretical, and historical perspectives. Team-taught course. Each offering is unique. Recent topics: Conceptualism and the End of Time; The Body in Contemporary Art; For the Love of the Page: Medieval Manuscripts to Contemporary Artists’ Books. Repeatable for credit with change of topic. (In order to count for the MA in Art History, the course offering must be approved by the student’s advisor).
