2017 Summer Discovery Art Program

The Summer Discovery Art Program 2017 is an intensive, 5 day academic program for middle and high school students that will provide an immersive experience in two- and three-dimensional art and time-based media. As they rotate through classes in various media, students collaborate to mount an exhibition at the end of the week. Students will learn the fundamentals of innovative, critical artmaking and curatorship. The program is geared towards giving students a taste of a rewarding, lifelong career in the arts through this hands-on program with engaged, committed faculty.

The program will take place on June 12-16, 2017 (for middle school students; non-residential), and June 19-23, 2017 (high school session 1; residential), and June 26-30 (high school session 2; residential). For the middle school program, classes will take place from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Parents drop off and pick up their sons/daughters in the morning and early evening, every day. For the high school program, students will stay in a dormitory on campus; classes will take place from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and there will be a few educational activities in the evenings. Parents and friends are invited to an exhibition at the end of each week, beginning on Friday at 5:30pm, at the School of Art’s 3D Annex building.

The cost of the program is $250 per student (for middle school), and $350 per student (for high school). The high school fee is inclusive of room and board (i.e. cost of dormitory stay and 3 meals per day at the cafeteria). The dorm has drink and snack machines for student use at all hours of the day.

Five (5) $100 scholarships are being offered for the middle school program, and five (5) $175 scholarships for the high school program. If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships, please write a one-page letter (or better, have your son/daughter write a letter), stating why your son/daughter is interested in attending the Summer Discovery Art Program. Include the letter along with your application.
