Studio Arts

imageThe Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art focuses on the development of students’ personal artistic expression and technical skills in both traditional and experimental art techniques. In addition, students who have chosen to involve themselves in the pursuit of a BFA in Studio Art will gain an understanding of and appreciation for their artistic heritage while developing their awareness of the work of contemporary visual artists. University Core Curriculum requirements ensure that the graduates are instructed in a well-rounded course of academic study.  A BFA in Studio Art prepares students for careers in the studio arts as well as graduate study, specifically a Master of Fine Arts program.

Requirements for a Studio Art Major
Students working toward a BFA in Studio Art must complete a minimum of 120 semester credit hours, including the Art Foundations coursework, a 21-hour distribution of Studio Art disciplines, a 21-hour emphasis, 15 hours of Studio Art and Art History electives, a Senior Seminar, and the University Core Curriculum requirements for a BFA in the College of Visual & Performing Arts.

Upon completion of the Foundation Program coursework, students must select an area of emphasis from one of the following areas:

Ceramics
Jewelry Design + Metalsmithing
Painting + Drawing
Photography (DigiPrint option available)
Printmaking (DigiPrint option available)
Sculpture

The Senior Seminar serves as a capstone course which prepares students to compete in the professional art world as well as acquainting them with the requirements and procedures for the application and admission process for graduate study. Additionally, all BFA Studio majors are required to participate in a group exhibition during the Spring semester of their final year.

Requirements for a Studio Art Minor
Students working toward a Studio Art minor must complete a minimum of 18-21 semester credit hours, 9 of which must be taken at the 3000 and 4000 level, and may choose from minors in Ceramics, Drawing, Jewelry Design & Metalsmithing, Painting, Fine Arts Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture.

Courses taken to fulfill any requirement for a student’s major may not be used as part of the requirements for a minor in Studio imageArt.  These courses may serve, however, to fulfill prerequisites to upper-level courses.  Students may transfer up to 12 hours of approved art courses from another institution for credit toward an Studio Art minor, however 6 hours at the Junior/Senior level must be taken in residence at Texas Tech University.  Students must follow all prerequisites as they are listed for each course in the University Catalog.
