Plant and Soil Science
The Plant and Soil Science (PSS) Department has 20 faculty members, 15 of whom are active in water-related research and education. In addition to faculty and student resources, they have research laboratories on campus and field research sites located on the Texas Tech campus ( Quaker Avenue), at New Deal, and at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center at Dallas (horticulture). Faculty established research expertise in plants and soils that relate directly to water include:
- Plant water use efficiency as impacted by plant genetic characteristics, environmental conditions, water quality, and irrigation practices and technology.
- Soil infiltration and drainage studies, including croplands, playa lakes, and rangelands.
- Soil impacts of wastewater and saline water use.
- Plant growth forecasting from remote sensing of water stress.
