Natural Resources Management
The Natural Resources Management (NRM) Department has 16 faculty, with 9 of them active in water-related research and education. The department represents several areas within the broad context of natural resources management. They approach the study of natural resources, including water, from a habitat management perspective, which includes the interface of plants, animals, land, and water in a habitat setting. Their research sites include numerous locations in Texas, several other states, and several other countries. Faculty established research expertise that relate directly to water include:
- Surface vegetation and vegetation control effects on soil water, watersheds, and playa wetlands.
- Plant water use efficiency in rangelands and effects on animal production.
- Control of noxious species for water conservation.
- Playa wetlands and their relationship to wildlife, recreation, and water quality.
- GPS mapping of surface waters.
- Land application of biosolids effects on land use and water quality.
The department's water focus is to better understand effects of management actions on water volumes and quality, issues concerning wetlands and waterfowl, and fisheries habitat management.
