Chair's Message
The arrival of fall and a new academic year brings new students to campus and excitement in the air. This fall with hurricane Harvey, it is also a time to come together, help one another, and have gratitude for what we have. I do hope that those of you in Houston are safe and healthy, and that the cleaning and rebuilding, if any, are minor. Please reach out and let us know how you are. Student News
The AIChE Student Chapter at Texas Tech University is starting off the 2017/18 academic year with membership of 200 students and a dynamic group of officers. Led by President Joe Carrera, the group plans to build on their momentum from last year, including organizing tours to industrial facilities and research laboratories and performing community outreach.

Graduate Student News
Ph.D. student, Ziye Dong, is one of five graduate students who will receive the prestigious Graduate Student Design and Research Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). Ziye, who is supervised by Dr. Wei Li, works on biodegradable nanofilms for isolating and recovery of cancer cells. He is in his third year of the Ph.D. program and has published two papers as first author and three as coauthor. In his work, he has used hollow microspheres coated with a thin polymer film containing antibodies that specifically bind to the cancer cells in order to capture the cells from a blood sample. Faculty News
Dr. Sheima Khatib received a Visiting Faculty award to work at Brookhaven National Laboratory this past summer. Dr. Khatib's research focuses on atomic and nanoscale aspects of heterogeneous catalysis, including catalyst synthesis, structural characterization, and catalytic reactor engineering. One of her current research topics focuses on the catalytic methane aromatization process, which is a sustainable reaction for the direct conversion of methane, from natural gas, to higher value products, namely, benzene and hydrogen. To do this, her laboratory is developing novel zeolite-supported metal carbide catalysts with improved benzene selectivity and lower propensity to deactivation by carbon deposition. Read More

Outstanding Achievements
The Department of Chemical Engineering is building the Valero Experiential Learning Laboratory with a $ 1 million gift from Valero Energy Corporation, a San Antonio-based Fortune 50 Company. The new laboratory will be located in the old Petroleum Engineering building and will nearly double
the space of the current laboratory, which has been housed in the basement of the ChE building for the last fifty years. The gift will ensure that ChE undergraudates have access to world-class learning facilities
