Name & Social Security Number Change Information
A copy of your current social security card will be required to make changes to either your name or your social security number. Marriage licenses or other court documents are no longer accepted as proof of a name change. The only exception will be for international students who have not been issued a social security card. In that case, a copy of your visa is required. You should update your social security card prior to coming to change your name or SSN at Texas Tech.
At the time of application to Texas Tech University, the student's name and social security number are taken from the application exactly as written or typed. This student information is used by all University offices.
The name and social security number will remain the same until the student record is closed upon graduation unless one of the following occurs:
A Name Correction:
Name corrections are only completed for typographical errors. The student is required to complete the name change section of the Student Information Correction Form and supply a copy of their current social security card.
A Name Change:
A registered student who wishes to change his/her name on University records, must complete the name change section of the Student Information Correction Form and present proper verification of the former and new name. For any student with a social security number, the only documentation accepted is a copy of your social security card. Your name in the student record system will appear exactly as it appears on your social security card. International students who have not received a social security card must present a copy of their passport page showing their correct name.
This proof is required for all changes, even if the student is adding or dropping one of the following:
- I, II, III, IV, Jr, Sr, or some other suffix to the name
- Middle name or initial
- Hyphen addition or deletion (Smith Jones to Smith-Jones)
- Middle initial to full middle name (John P. Jones to John Paul Jones)
A Social Security Number Change:
A registered student who wishes to change his/her social security number on University records, must complete the social security number section of the Student Information Correction Form and present proper verification in the form of a social security card.
Former TTU Students
Texas Tech University maintains student records under the name the student had when last enrolled. A student who has received a bachelor's or higher degree from Texas Tech University or is not registered, must present proper verification in the form of a social security card in order to change his/her name or social security number.
Students who are also TTU Employees
Students who are also employed by Texas Tech University or Health Sciences Center
must have the exact same name and social security number on record in their student
records and their Human Resource records. If you are a student and an employee of
TTU, present the Student Information Correction Form at either West Hall or Drane
Hall. If you are a student and employed by HSC, you will need to contact the HSC Human
Resources office at the Health Sciences Building on 4th street.
