Teaching
Assistantships
All Doctoral students are eligible to
be awarded teaching assistantships for up to 5 years, so
long as their past performance is adequate. The
remaining teaching assistantships are awarded to Masters
students on a competitive basis with preference given to
students taking the thesis option. Currently enrolled
students with good academic records plus a history of
good past performance as a TA or RA are given preference
over incoming students. However, outstanding incoming
students also have a good chance to obtain teaching
assistantships.
Teaching Assistantships require
proficiency in English communication; speaking and
writing as well as listening and reading. Any necessary
academic leveling must be completed in order to be
eligible to compete for appointments supported from
departmental resources.
- Research
Assistantships
The number of research assistantships varies with the needs and funding of the department's research program. The RA appointments support research that is performed in connection with externally-funded grants or contracts. The individual faculty member who has won the research grant controls the associated research assistantships. In general, preference is given first to Doctoral students and second to Masters students who are taking the thesis option.
