Distance Learning – Outreach and Extended Learning

Texas Tech University offers college credit courses and degree programs as well as K-12 options, a high school diploma program, and non-credit programs at a distance. Offering flexibility and convenience, distance learning opportunities are available in several formats, including web-based independent study (print and, in some cases, online), CD-ROM, two-way interactive television, video, e-mail and audio. These options enable students to take both credit and non-credit courses at their convenience, choosing the appropriate time and place to meet their needs. All college credit courses meet the same academic standards as campus-based courses, and, in many cases, are taught by the same faculty.

Extended Studies works closely with the academic departments to offer print-based, and in some cases web-based, college credit courses that are self-paced and can be completed regardless of your geographical location. Students often take courses through Distance Learning to resolve scheduling conflicts or as an alternative to summer school. If you are pursuing a degree at Texas Tech University, you must receive approval from your academic dean’s office before enrolling in a distance learning course. Seeking approval prior to registering for these courses will ensure the student understands how the course will or will not apply to the degree the student is seeking to earn at TTU. For more information, students are encouraged to contact Outreach and Extended Learning.

Programs for Academic Support Services (PASS) - Learning Center

The Learning Center provides a variety of learning assistance services designed to enhance students’ academic effectiveness while empowering them to make the most of the educational opportunities available at the university.  Students have already paid for these services with their semester fees, thus there is no additional charge when students make use of the center’s resources. Services include, but are not necessarily limited to, in-house and on-line peer tutoring (math, science, foreign languages), computer lab access, test preparation study guides, testing accommodations and outreach presentations. Outreach presentations as well as individual study skills advising are offered on topics such as time management, reading comprehension, test taking strategies and test anxiety, listening / note taking skills and applying your learning style to various learning situations. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered in various courses to help students be academically successful. SI targets difficult courses and hires student peers who have taken and successfully completed the class (made a grade of “A”) to be an SI leader. The SI leaders attend the class with the students, hold voluntary group study sessions throughout the week for students currently taking the course, and assist the students in learning to apply successful study strategies. Research shows that students who regularly attend SI sessions will make ½ to one whole letter grade higher than the students who do not attend the sessions.

The Office of Student Financial Aid maintains a Part-time Employment Service (Student Employment Office/Part-time Employment) which assists students in locating employment. The office provides a current listing of both on-campus and off-campus employment opportunities for referral purposes. The Part-time Employment Service and prospective employers require a personal interview prior to employee selection.

All students are required to register at our offices prior to interviewing with any potential employers. Employment opportunities received by the office range from those which require no experience to those which are highly skilled and technical.  Employment opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Childcare
- Clerical
- Health Science
- Housework
- Miscellaneous
- Restaurant
- Sales
- Yard Work Etc.

Student Employment Wages
The rate of pay (like most any job) varies with previous experience and training of the applicant. It is decided upon by the employer, not the Part-time Employment Office. Also, most employers prefer to have part-time employees on a schedule which permits them to work from three to four or more hours at a time.

Student Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) - Financial Aid for Students

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a program provided by the Federal Government that allows this University to employ students based on their financial aid eligibility. The awarded amount is NOT applied directly to registration expenses. Students have to work in order to receive the amount of money awarded to them. You do not, however, have to pay any of it back after you graduate; nor will it go against your financial aid eligibility in future years.

How To Be Awarded Federal Work Study
If you are not sure that you have been awarded Federal Work-Study, you need to contact the Financial Aid Office regarding your award for this program. Federal Work-Study is based on Financial need, therefore, the Financial Aid Office has to determine if FWS can be part of your aid package.

How To Find A Job
Having accepted Federal Work-Study as part of your financial aid package, sign and return your award letter to the Financial Aid Office. Now it is time to start looking for a job. Look at the bulletin boards located outside the Federal Work-Study Office (312 West hall) or On-Line Job Postings. It is your choice and you make your own decision concerning which job(s) you might be interested in and qualified to apply for. Call the Department you may qualify to work for or stop by their office (whatever the ad tells you to do), and schedule an interview.

You DO NOT start work without signing the necessary forms. Return to the FWSP office, after you have been hired, to pick up the necessary paperwork in order to start working. DO NOT expect to receive a paycheck for the hours you have worked if you do not return the signed forms to this office. There may be an exception to this procedure. The exception needs to be authorized by the FWSP office, if someone else other than the FWSP office allows you to do so, this office needs to be notified immediately. It is your responsibility to make sure that the FWSP office is aware of any changes.

Pick up the necessary paperwork and take it to the department that you will be working for, and have them complete their part of the agreement. Again, before you start working, you need to return the signed paperwork (Authorization Card) to the Federal Work-Study Office. This office will not consider you working under this program without an Authorization Card filled out and signed by you and the department that you will be working for. You will be filling out Time Sheets every two weeks in order for you to receive a paycheck for the hours worked every two weeks. Instructions on how to fill out these time sheets are on the back of each form. A schedule listing Pay Periods, Due Dates, and Pay Dates will be provided to you along with the Authorization Card.

Additional Information
Consult the Financial Aid website and contact the office of Financial Aid. They will be happy to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have about the TTU Work Study program.

Texas Success Initiative Program (TSI) – Skills Development Office

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) took the place of TASP as of September 1, 2003. Under the Texas Success Initiative, any student who is not exempt is required to take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA), the Compass, Accuplacer, or Asset test to test for basic skills in the areas of reading, math, and writing.

TSI was implemented to ensure that students enrolled in Texas public colleges and universities possess the necessary academic skills to succeed. The THEA test – a diagnostic assessment of reading, mathematics, and writing skills – must be taken by all entering undergraduate students without exempt or waived statuses. Students may also take the TSI approved tests: Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass.

TSI test scores are not used to determine admissions status; however, entering students must test before enrolling in college-level courses in any Texas public institution of higher education. Students are strongly encouraged to take a TSI approved test before coming to Texas Tech so that the scores may be used to help determine initial placement in college courses.

THEA test registration must usually be completed a month prior to the scheduled testing date. Six or more test dates are available each year at 110 Texas locations. TASP test registration booklets are available at most Texas public college and universities or by writing to the testing company, National Evaluation Systems, Inc., PO Box 140347, Austin, Texas 78714-0347.

Students who have tested but have not attained the established minimum scores on all three sections of the test are required by Texas Law to obtain TSI advising and to enroll in a formal program of skills development each semester until they have passed all sections of the test. Assigned skills development must be completed as a condition of enrollment.

The objective of the Skills Development Program is to assist student to improve their readiness for successful completion of college-level work. Students are required by Texas State Law to formulate a skills development plan with a TSI advisor each semester. Following the completion of their skills development plan, students are required to retake and pass the THEA Test. Developmental work that is TSI required is mandatory and students cannot drop any developmental courses from their schedule.  TSI students should address questions concerning their basic skills classes to the TSI Skills Development Office.

TTU Prelaw Program – Advising Center at Texas Tech (ACTT)

The TTU Prelaw Program is a four year structured program that supports students through their undergraduate course of study. The program focuses on the development of skill sets that law schools value in the students who are admitted. The TTU Prelaw Program also supports students in discovering a best-fit academic major that will lead to the practicing or non-practicing law career of their choice.

ACTT is the academic home for TTU prelaw students. ACTT advisors will help students learn about and assess their values, their strengths and challenges personally and academically, their talents, opportunities, and choices thereby preparing students to make an informed choice about a best fit major.

Through the ACTT SILO program, prelaw students learn how to tailor the educational opportunities afforded them at TTU into a structured, well developed educational plan directed toward applying to law school.  Interested students should contact the Advising Center at Texas Tech (ACTT) to find out how to participate in the program.

TTU Center at Junction

Texas Tech University Center at Junction is located in the Central Texas Hill Country. The campus provides an excellent setting for a variety of year-round activities. Located on the South Llano River, the diverse 400 acre campus provides a natural landscape for academic learning, recreation, and solitude.  As part of Texas Tech University, the Junction campus serves as a natural laboratory for science courses as well as being a vital part of the Department of Art's recruiting and graduate studies.

The center offers regular, full-credit undergraduate and graduate courses in an intensive format over three-week periods, May through July.  An Intersession is held in May, allowing students to earn up to three hours credit between the spring and the summer sessions. These courses ordinarily include art, biology, botany, zoology, geography, education, and physical education, and have first priority for campus use.

In addition to regular credit courses, the center is used for workshops, retreats, continuing education short courses, and other special activities.  The center is frequently used by Texas Tech student organizations, faculty groups, and researchers.  Other universities and colleges, state and federal agencies, professional organizations and foundations regularly schedule activities at the Center.  The Center's facilities can be used, on a space available, basis by non-profit groups and organizations for modest charges.  Annually the Texas Tech Center at Junction sponsors many special events such as an International Kite Retreat, a Spring Retreat for Art Educators, and an Elder Hostel program.

Many entering freshmen first experience the Junction Campus facilities as attendees of Red Raider Camp. Red Raider Camp (RRC) is an exciting program for first-year college students to introduce them to the traditions and culture that make Texas Tech University unique! At RRC you will have fun, develop the skills you will need to be successful in college and learn what it means to be a “true Red Raider!” Your Red Raider Camp experience will help ease your transition into college life and will give you an opportunity to create a support network within the University community.

The richness of the flora and fauna and the beauty of the physical setting create an unusually relaxing atmosphere for these programs while also providing the opportunity for intensive academic study. Join us in Junction for a unique educational experience you are sure to enjoy!

Undecided, Undeclared, and Uncertain – Advising Center at Texas Tech (ACTT)

Incoming freshmen and transfer students are often unsure of a direction regarding an academic major and often choose the “Undecided” category to begin their educational career. The Undecided academic status actually consists of three subgroups: undecided, undeclared, and uncertain.  The three subgroups have some common characteristics, but are better defined as being in different stages of the decision-making process for selecting a best fit degree program.

Undecided:  truly means the student does not know where to begin or what options are available from which to choose a major.

Uncertain: the student who has narrowed the degree options to a specific college or to two or three specific majors.

Undeclared:  the student has researched and made a best fit choice, but for various reasons (such as college regulations or grade requirements) are unable to declare that major.

Whichever the case may be, “undecided,” “uncertain,” and “undeclared” students have options. For Arts & Sciences Undecided (ASUD) students, the first year offers a time for major/discipline exploration and is time when many students switch majors.

By entering the University as ASUD, “undecided” and “uncertain” students have the opportunity to work on general education or core curriculum courses (applicable toward most majors) while also considering which major/discipline route is best by participating in the ACTT DISCOVERY! Program. For “undeclared” students, this first year will be used to focus on setting appropriate educational goals, preparing an educational plan to reach the stipulated goals, enhancing or developing a strong academic work ethic, concentrating on completing coursework successfully, and otherwise preparing to declare their desired major.

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research is an excellent opportunity for students to expand and enhance their educational experience at the university. In all colleges and departments across the campus, professors are looking for motivated students to help them with research.  This might come in the form of a course for which you might receive degree credit, a paying undergraduate assistant position, or simple volunteer work. All of these opportunities can lead to publications.

The first step is to find research in which you are interested in learning more.  Also, it's best to work with a professor that you already know and get along with.  Each department has a list detailing TTU professors and the type of research in which they are involved. This list is available to any student upon request. The easiest method is to simply approach a professor and ask him/her about his/her research. This is a guaranteed way of opening the path to communication. If you have a specific instructor for class whose lectures you readily enjoy, we recommend starting with him/her. They will be excited about your interest and will most likely be able to assist you in finding a position with their own research or a colleague with who might be doing related work.

Undergraduate research is by no means required, but it does show that you have the motivation to go beyond the normal classroom experience and the desire for acquiring additional knowledge. These two factors are especially important for students intending to pursue Master’s or Doctoral study after receiving their Bachelor’s degree. Keep in mind that you do not have to limit your research experience to your major or minor. You may become involved in research in any academic area that interests you. For more information, we recommend you speak to your professors, academic departments on campus, and even the college offices. You might also begin with the Office of Research, Technology Transfer, and Economic Development:

XL – Strategies for Learning (XL – 0201)

The XL: Strategies for Learning program is a resource for helping students ensure their academic success.  Implemented in 1989, XL provides opportunities for students to acquire and build learning strategies for college and improves resources and curricula with help from students and instructors. XL is open to all students at Texas Tech University. Classes generally average 25 to 27 students beginning the first week of class and meeting 21 class sessions during the semester.

Course goals are to provide students with opportunities for personal and academic skill development. These include setting and achieving academic goals, learning style awareness, time management skills, stress management, and academic study strategies. In addition to classroom interaction, students are given the opportunity to have individualized time with the instructor to pinpoint and work on specific problems that might hinder the student's success.

XL is a non-credit course with a mandatory attendance policy. The cost for the course is $150 (a non-refundable course-fee). Those students who are returning from academic suspension or freshman who do not achieve a 2.0 GPA in their first semester are required to register for XL in order to continue their enrollment at Texas Tech.
