Problem Solving with Students
Advisors frequently question how much responsibility to take in student problem solving. You should assist students in making their own decisions and show them where they can get help. Avoid telling students what to do or making decisions for them. It is also best to avoid trying to solve all the students' problems. An initial discussion of advisor roles and student expectations can circumvent any misunderstanding by the advisee.
