Universal Mentors (UMs)
What is an UM?
First Generation College (FGC) Student Universal Mentors (UMs) are FGC students who serve as role models and sources of support for new FGC students enrolled at Texas Tech University as well as all PEGASUS Mentors. Throughout the semester, Universal Mentors help to ease the transition of new FGC students as well as offer encouragement and guidance to Mentors by sharing their experiences as successful students.
What are the UMs required to do?
A Universal Mentor's (UM) primary responsibility is to be readily accessible to both PEGASUS Mentors and Members. Rather than being assigned to one Mentor Team specifically, each UM will be considered as a part of every Mentor Team. Therefore, the UM position functions as an extension of the PEGASUS Mentor Team Model. UMs will also actively participate in PEGASUS Program events.
Other responsibilities include meetings with program coordinating staff (required monthly meeting with the Program Coordinator) and attending bi-monthly Mentor Meetings; POWER Session and Study Session facilitation; participation at social and outreach events. Universal Mentors are also actively involved in their own professional development.
