Freshman 1st Semester
First Semester
Fill out PEGASUS Membership application at
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/advising/pegasus/students/index.php
Attend FGC information session during your New Student Orientation
Attend the PEGASUS Program's Fall Welcoming Event: take a close look at the event calendar so that you can plan early
Schedule an appointment to meet with your FGC Academic Advisor in the Advising Center at Texas Tech (ACTT): come with questions, ask about how many hours might be too many
Once you are on campus, take a walk around! Get to know the layout of campus, where your classroom buildings are, and other important places so that you will not be lost when classes start
Establish positive relationships with roommates and other students in your residence hall
Attend DISCOVERY!: Academic Physical Workshop
Attend at least 2 PEGASUS POWER Sessions: read through the topics carefully so that you can choose the ones most helpful for you
Develop your personal goals and share them with family so that they have the opportunity to understand your college experiences
Get a planner/calendar and use it!
Research the different student organizations that you may be of interest in joining
Introduce yourself to one classmate and exchange contact information
Introduce yourself to your professor
Sit in the first third of the class
Join and/or start a study group
Visit the Counseling Center: this is a great place to visit if you are experiencing home sickness or if you are having difficulties adjusting to college life)
Visit with both your Academic Advisor and your FGC Advisor at midterm to discuss progress
Visit the PASS (Programs for Academic Support Services) Learning Center for free tutoring: this is a great resource for students to utilize even if classes are going well
Schedule "study time" in your planner to prepare for finals ahead of time: utilize your study group
Make an appointment to meet with your professors so that you can accurately prepare for finals
Visit with your Academic Advisor to discuss course for next semester
Enjoy your Winter Break: rest, visit with family, or read a novel; these will be different for everyone, but engage in the activities that help you relax so that you come back next semester happy and well-rested
Freshman 2nd Semester
Second Semester
Look over the PEGASUS Spring Events calendar so that you can plan ahead: decide which POWER Sessions you plan to attend and make sure you have time in your schedule for the fun events as well
Join one of the student organizations you researched during your first semester
Review prior semester's grades with your FGC Academic Advisor: again, come with questions; ask about the policies/consequences of dropping a class
Check GPA for admissions to another college if you are contemplating transferring schools at the end of the semester
Visit the Career Center for more exploration and investigation into possible academic majors
Join and/or start a study group
Visit the PASS Learning Center for free tutoring
Prepare for Spring Break: work ahead in your classes so that you are not overwhelmed upon returning from the break, and practice safe travel during the break
Return from Spring Break rested and prepare a list of questions for your advisor concerning majors and/or areas of interest
Visit with your FGC Academic Advisor at midterm to discuss your progress; also, explore the possibility of becoming a PEGASUS Mentor during the summer if you plan to stay in Lubbock, or during the fall when you come back from the summer break
Schedule "study time" in your planner to prepare for finals ahead of time
Visit with your Academic Advisor to discuss performance and plan for next semester
Begin exploring your best fit major, utilize the resources given to you at the Career Center
Sophomore 1st Semester
First Semester
Welcome back to Texas Tech, you are continuing to make history
Join a student organization that is specific to your major: which will help you achieve your academic goals
Make an appointment to meet with all your professors during the first couple of weeks of school: this will set you ahead of the rest of the class and will work to your advantage when you need a recommendation letter or other help
from a professor
Maintain a positive attitude toward your academic abilities, you are the first in your family to go to college and you are continuing to make them proud
Sophomore 2nd Semester
Second Semester
Now that you are getting further into your college career it is important to remember that school comes first; at this point some students begin to let student organizations, friends, employment, and/or other responsibilities get in the way of maintaining successful progress toward a degree. Don't let this happen to you
Make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor to discuss a degree plan
Make an appointment to meet with your FGC Advisor to discuss your
academic and personal progress
File a Degree Plan for graduation
Maintain a positive rapport with your professors
Explore summer employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities; especially those which pertain to your major or future career field
Meet with a Career Counselor at the Career Center to assist with the internship search; also make sure to come in with questions, ask about ALL possible options you could take for a future career path
Remain confident in your potential to succeed; you can and you will!
