PADR: Programs for Academic Development & Retention
XL is a noncredit course with a mandatory attendance policy. From Spring 2003, students required to repeat the XL course will be placed into a section with a more in-depth and tailored curriculum. Thus XL will have two different curricula one for first time students and the other for repeaters. In addition to the skills discussed above under Mission, the XL course covers Stephen R. Coveys The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and how to use the FranklinCovey™ personal management system widely used by professionals in most disciplines.

PEGASUS First Generation College Students Program
Pioneers in Education: Generations Achieving Scholarship and Unprecedented Success.
Texas Tech University recognizes the unique needs of First Generation College (FGC) students and provides academic, social, and personal support during their first year experience through Texas Tech University Advising (TTUA). FGC students (students whose immediate family or guardians did not complete a four-year bachelor’s degree) often do not have a comprehensive perspective of the university culture and could not succeed without academic advising specific to their needs. FGC students that want to meet peers, develop skills that lead to success in college, or would like to have a FGC Mentor should contact the PEGASUS program located in University Advising.

Psychology Clinic
The clinic offers a broad range of outpatient mental health services. Clinic therapists provide individual therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. The clinic also offers couples and family counseling. At times, group therapy is available in the clinic. Clinic therapists help clients with a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, and adjustment to difficult or stressful life situations.
Therapists can also assist individuals who need help deciding on an initial career choice or changing careers. In addition, many therapists are trained to treat childhood disorders and help parents cope with these disorders.
Cases involving litigation are usually difficult to accommodate with services that are provided by doctoral students.
We are not a crises center. Therefore, we are unable to meet the needs of individuals that require 24 hour access to support. If we cannot meet your needs we will refer you to a center that can meet your needs.

Student Counseling Center
The Student Counseling Center provides short term counseling and consultation to students who are experiencing emotional and psychological problems that are interfering with their ability to be successful in school and with their individual personal development. Our purpose is not to provide intense treatment for severe, chronic, or long-term mental illness or mental health problems.
Due to the high volume of students that are seen in the SCC, individual therapy is provided on a time-limited basis. Students are provided 8 individual sessions per academic year should they be found appropriate for our services during the Walk-In Clinic Intake. Other services provided by the SCC have an unlimited amount of usage (i.e. group therapy, couples counseling, outreach services, and mind/body lab).

Student Disability Services
At the Texas Tech Student Disability Services Office our mission is to enhance each student’s learning through the provision of programs and services for students with a disability. Our goal is to assist you in attaining your academic, career, and personal goals – regardless of any physical, learning, psychological, psychiatric, or other documented disability you may have. Within the SDS Office we provide reasonable in-class accommodations based on the documented needs of each of our students. We also have a comprehensive student retention program and offer skill-building workshops designed to enhance students’ in-class learning. These topics are focused on the skills necessary to be successful both in the classroom and in life, and topics include areas such as organization, time management, note taking, tips for test taking, and many others. Accommodations are tailored to the individual rather than the disability, and are based on information contained in each student’s documentation.
The TECHniques Center is a specialized, fee based program of Student Disability Services which addresses the needs of students with LD or AD/HD. The TECHniques program provides 4-5 hours of individual tutoring per week, by tutors who are certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). The TECHniques Center also provides individualized assistance with time management, study skills and self advocacy skills. Students are required to meet weekly with their counselor to review progress and grades.

Suppemental Instruction (SI)
The Supplemental Instruction Program (SI) seeks to increase retention within historically difficult courses; to improve student grades in targeted historically difficult courses; and to increase the graduation rates of students.
SI participants develop an in-depth understanding of course content in addition to effective study skills that
are transferable to college work. The mission of the SI
Program contributes to the University’s strategic priority
of increasing enrollment and promoting student success.
Research indicates that students earn one-half to one full letter grade higher if they attend SI sessions regularly throughout the semester.
Supplemental Instruction targets historically difficult,
entry level courses. A course falls into this category by
having 30% or higher in D’s, F’s, or W’s grade distribution
from the initial enrollment. SI leaders (students who have
previously taken the course, mastered the content, and are recommended by a professor) schedule regular sessions designed to follow the course syllabus.
Each SI leader must attend lectures for the classes they
support. This allows them to specifically follow the professor’s unique approach towards course content. From
course notes, which the SI Leaders garner from the lectures, they prepare study sessions focusing on a specific study strategy. These sessions are not of a tutorial nature, but are instead a peer-facilitated learning environment encouraging the participation of all students in attendance, rather than targeting high-risk students.

TTU PreLaw Program
The TTU PreLaw Program is a four year structured program that supports students through their undergraduate course of study. The program focuses on the development of skill sets that law schools value in the students who are admitted. The TTU PreLaw Program also supports students in discovering a best-fit academic major that will lead to the practicing or non-practicing law career of their choice.
Univesity Advising is the academic home for TTU PreLaw students. PreLaw advisors help students learn about and assess their values, their strengths and challenges personally and academically, their talents, and their opportunities. This information guides students to informed choices about a best fit major.

Undecided, Undeclared, and Unsure Student Resources
Incoming freshmen and transfer students are often unsure of a direction
regarding an academic major and often choose the “Undecided” category to begin
their educational career. The Undecided academic status actually consists of
three subgroups: undecided, undeclared, and uncertain. The three subgroups have
some common characteristics, but are better defined as being in different stages
of the decision-making process for selecting a best fit degree program.
Undecided : truly means the student does not know where to
begin or what options are available from which to choose a major.
Unsure : the student who has narrowed the degree options to
a specific college or to two or three specific majors.
Undeclared : the student has researched and made a best fit
choice, but for various reasons (such as college regulations or grade
requirements) are unable to declare that major.

University Advising
University Advising (UA) exists to engage, equip, empower, and encourage students (and their families) to explore and excel in their educational goals and beyond.
University Advising serves the campus community via seven distinct and yet closely related advising endeavors:
University Advising, via the Campus Advising Liaison carries out directives on advising, promotes national standards of excellence, facilitates collaboration, and as a representative of the Committee on Academic Advising & Retention , provides an initial contact point for academic advising matters at Texas Tech University.
The University Advising Center is a physical space and open door in 079 Holden Hall. The Advising Center provides accessible staff members who assist students seeking academic direction, refers students to available campus resources, and serves as home for all UA programs and appointments.
Exploratory & Preparatory Advising is provided for students who have not yet declared a major. These students are designated as University Undeclared & Exploratory . UA also advises students who are pursuing entrance to restricted academic majors, e.g., PreEngineering . Each UA student works with his or her assigned full-time academic advisor until declaring into an academic department.
The TTU Discovery! Program supports the academic exploration of any student considering a change of major, including the students assigned to UA by their academic designation.
The TTU PreLaw Program , in conjunction with a student's assigned major advisor, provides four years of academic guidance for any TTU student or graduate who is pursuing education in a school of law. Students desiring to minor in Legal Studies also meet with UA staff to determine appropriate coursework for the minor.
The TTU PreEngineering Program provides an opportunity for students not directly admitted into an engineering major to engage the preparation necessary for them to successfully transition into their intended program of study.
A&S On-Site Recruiters for Prospective Students provide guidance for each prospective student (and family) when these campus visitors are 1) considering majors in the College of Arts & Sciences, 2) interested in a professional education in law, or 3) investigating potential majors en route to find their best academic fit.
