The Department of Animal and Food Sciences offers the following degree programs:
- M.S. Thesis – Animal Science - Minimum of 30 hours required, thesis.
- M.S. Thesis – Food Science – Minimum of 30 hours required, thesis.
- M.S. Non-thesis option* - Animal Science – Minimum of 36 hours required plus an internship
- Ph.D. degree – Animal Science – Minimum 60** credit hours plus 12 dissertation hours, dissertation.
- Ph.D. degree – Animal Science with emphasis in Exercise Physiology (Collaborative Program with Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences) Minimum 60** credit hours plus 12 dissertation hours, dissertation.
*Non-thesis degrees are terminal degrees. Students completing non-thesis degrees are not eligible for doctoral work.
**Up to 30 credit hours (exclusive of thesis hours and seminar hours) from the MS degree can be used toward the 60-credit hour requirement at the discretion of the student’s graduate advisory committee and the departmental graduate coordinator or department chairman.
The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources offers the following degree program:
M.Ag. Non-thesis* – Emphasis in Animal Science or Food Science

Minimum of 36 hours required with 18 hours in animal or food science, and the other 18 hours need to be in at least two other subject areas in the college or university.

Non-thesis degree that is administered through the college in cooperation with the various departments within the college.
*Non-thesis degrees are terminal degrees. Students completing non-thesis degrees are not eligible for doctoral work.
Domestic students should apply to the Graduate School at least three months prior to their intended enrollment, international students at least six months prior to their intended enrollment.

- Domestic students pay a $50 application fee
- International students par a $75 application fee
- There are different applications for domestic and international students
- Once the Graduate School receives the application further instructions will follow.
Graduate Record Exam – General Test.
- For information on the GRE go to: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/testing
o The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.
o The GRE consists of three parts: Verbal, Quantitative, and the Analytical Writing portion. Each part of the verbal and quantitative is scored from 200 to 800. The writing portion is scored from 0 to 6 in half-point increments.
o The department of AFS expects applicants to have a combined verbal and qualitative score of 1000 or greater and a writing score of 3.5 or higher although the University has a holistic admissions policy that evaluates candidates on many factors not just GRE scores, GPA or any other single factor.
Official transcripts (not copies) of all college work.

Applicants are expected to have an overall 3.0/4.0 GPA in undergraduate course work.
- Transcripts should be sent to The Graduate School, Texas Tech University, Box 41030, Lubbock, TX 79409. Transcripts with a degree in progress can be submitted but a final transcript indicating the awarding of a B.S. or B.A. degree will be required for final acceptance by the TTU Graduate School.

Three letters of recommendation sent to:

Application Review Process
Once the Graduate School receives the application, transcripts and official GRE scores (and TOFEL scores for international students), and the department receives the fact sheet, the applicant’s resume or CV, applicant’s statement of short term and long term educational and career goals, and three letters of recommendation, the applicant’s information is reviewed by faculty members in the student’s indicated area of interest. If accepted by a faculty member, the graduate coordinator will notify the graduate school of the department’s interest to accept the student. The Graduate School makes the final decision on acceptance and notifies the applicant.
