Horse Judging Team

The TTU Horse Judging Team is led by Casey Orr. The team travels to several contests throughout the year including QH and APHA World Shows and QH Congress. They judge horses on conformation (halter) as well as performance classes such as reining, western pleasure and hunter under saddle. The team also assists in the production of the Area and State 4-H and FFA Horse Judging Contests. Please contact Dr. Sam Jackson at sam.jackson@ttu.edu

Equestrian Team

The Tech Equestrian Team represents Texas Tech University in equestrian competitions at Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) affiliated shows. The team consists of both hunt seat and western teams that compete in several events, including hunt seat equitation on the flat and over fences, western horsemanship, and reining. All riders are placed into skill levels based on riding and horse show experience. This ensure that riders compete against other with similar background at the shows. When traveling to IHSA shows, participants compete using the host university's horses and tack. Riders draw a horse to ride at random and proceed to mount and enter the arena to show. No warm or practice time is allowed. It is a true test of horsemanship. Riders earn points for placing in their classes. If a rider accumulates the required points, they advance to the next division and qualify for the post-season championships. Our team is a member of the IHSA and competes in Zone 7, Region 1 competitions. We compete against schools across west Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, and Nebraska. The Tech Equestrian Team offers a unique challenge to any level rider. Experience, tack, and horse-ownership are not required or needed. Rodeo Team

The TTU Rodeo Club is a very active association about sixty members strong. Many of the members are traveling competitors in NIRA sanctioned rodeos. Many others help to support the program with their help and encouragement during rodeos and practices. One of the biggest events of the year for the rodeo team is the production of the annual Texas Tech University NIRA Rodeo held in October.
