Collaborative research brings national recognition at ASAS Conference

Brandon Trojan, a resident physician in urology at the University Medical Center, was recently honored when his research poster was selected as a 'Presidential Pick' at the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) meetings in Kansas City. The poster represented a collaborative research project between Texas Tech University's Health Sciences Center and the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. It was entitled, "Integrating animal science and human medicine: development of a novel porcine model for calcium oxalate stone formation."

"The project was a wonderful example of the resources that become available with collaboration between disciplines," explained Trojan. "The project could not have been completed without the help of the swine center staff including Stanley Harris and Edward Carrasco."

According to Texas Tech researchers, Trojan's project was the first to use a porcine model for the evaluation of calcium-based stone formation. Other animal models evaluating stone formation have used rats; however, the porcine model more closely resembles human anatomy and physiology.

'Presidential Pick's' are a special honor for the Joint Annual Meeting poster presenters. The ASAS Presidents (Past President, President, and President-Elect) each reviewed more than 1,200 poster submissions and choose their 36 favorites to be honored at the meeting. This is the third year that posters were included in the ASAS awards ceremony.
