Dr. Ralph M. "Doc" Durham Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. Ralph M. "Doc" Durham Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in 1995 by Mrs. Jane Durham and family and friends of Dr. Durham in his memory to provide scholarships to students majoring in animal science.

Dr. Durham passed away in August 1994 at the age of 70. He was born in Bristol, Colo. and graduated from Colorado State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry before receiving bachelor"s and master"s degrees in genetics from the University of Wisconsin in 1951. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. After the war, he married Jane Tuttle. They had eight children: David, Barbara (Flournoy), James, Margaret, Eileen (Aiken), John, Mary (Bowles) and Nancy (Stewart), born in five states, as he completed his doctorate and did teaching and research for the USDA and several agricultural universities. They moved to Lubbock in 1959.

Dr. Durham conducted research on swine at the University of Wisconsin, on beef cattle and sheep at New Mexico A&M University, and on identifying meat-type hogs under direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

From 1950 to 1980, Dr. Durham was on the faculty at Texas Tech University, serving as head of the Department of Animal Husbandry from 1958 to 1964. He retired as a professor emeritus in 1980. He served as a visiting professor at Colorado State University and continued research at his farm near Smyer, Texas until fully retiring in 1992.
