Inez and Laurence Harmon Endowed Scholarship

The Inez and Laurence Harmon Scholarship Endowment was established in 1996 by Laurence G. Harmon, to provide scholarships to upper class Food Technology majors.

Dr. Laurence G. Harmon received a bachelor"s degree from Kansas State University before coming to Texas Tech University to receive a master"s degree in Dairy Management in 1940. He then received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in Microbiology. He served on the Texas Tech University Dairy Industry faculty from 1936 to 1954 and on the Dairy and Food Science and Human Nutrition faculties at Michigan State University from 1954 until retirement in 1980.

During his professional career, he was listed in Who"s Who in America, Who"s Who in the Southwest, Mid-West, American Education and Technology, American Men and Women of Science, Dictionary of International Biography, and other publications. He is the past president of the American Dairy Science Association and received the Award of Honor, Pfizer Award for research in cheese, and lifetime membership. He served 28 years on the editorial board of the Journal of Food Protection and received the Distinguished Service Award. He was the past president of the Great Lakes Section of the Institute of Food Technologists and served as National Councilor. Dr. Harmon also served 10 years on the Scientific Advisory Board of Dairy Research Inc. and received a Distinguished Service Award from that organization. He also served 20 years as secretary of the Detroit Dairy Technology.

His teaching responsibilities included almost 5,000 undergraduate students and direction to completion of approximately 40 M.S. students and 20 Ph.D. students. He authored and co-authored approximately 50 publications in referred scientific journals and 25 non-scientific articles in trade journals.

Inez Harmon also graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1938. She served as secretary in the Texas Tech Department of Dairy Industry from 1936 to 1939 and Registrar"s secretary from 1943 to 1945. She was a past president of the Texas Tech Faculty Women"s Club, held offices in Eastern Star, and was active in the First Baptist Church. In Michigan, she was an officer in various arts and crafts, church, university, and civic organizations including Girl Scout leadership. She served 10 years in the hospital auxiliary service and 18 years as a volunteer in the Michigan State University Oncology Clinic.
