The J. Wayland Bennett Scholarship Endowment was established by the friends and family of J. Wayland Bennett in 1989 in honor of his many years of service at Texas Tech University. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students of all classifications, who qualify for a Silver Dean's Scholar Scholarship or students who are majoring in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.

Dr. Bennett was born and raised in Loraine, TX and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He received a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas Tech University and a master's and doctorate from Louisiana State University. He began as an Assistant Professor at Texas Tech University in Agricultural Economics in 1948 and became an Associate Professor in 1955, Professor in 1957, and the Charles C. Thompson Professor in Agricultural Finance in 1979. He also held many titles in Academic Administration, including Associate Dean of the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources from 1977 to 1988.

He was involved in many service organizations and honor societies. One if his highest distinctions was being appointed by Governor John Connally to a four-man study team of the "European Market and Texas Agriculture" in 1963. Dr. Bennett received numerous honors and awards throughout his years in education. Some of these include: Outstanding Faculty Member by the Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa, Distinguished Educator Award by the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, two distinguished service awards from different Lubbock organizations, and the Outstanding Teacher Award by the Texas Tech University Student Agricultural Council.

Dr. Bennett was married to Betty Hughes Bennett. They had one daughter, Marilyn Guthrie, and a granddaughter, Catherine Lyons.
