Government Internship Scholarship

The Government Intern Scholarship was established by various donors for annual donations in 1998. Donors include Plains Cotton Growers, Inc., South Texas Cotton and Grain Association, Texas Corn Producers Board, Texas Farm Bureau, Texas Grain Sorghum Association, Texas Peanut Producers Board, Texas Wheat Producers Association, Jody and Betsy Bellah, Jim and Paula Prewitt, and Dan and Linda Taylor. These scholarships are for students in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources who participate in the Government Student Internship Program.

In 1998, the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources established a Government Internship Program for Davis College students. This has turned out to be one of the most significant programs ever put into place. Since establishment of the program, over 100 students have served as interns in congressional and legislative offices in Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas.

Students have worked with Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn, US Representatives Mike Conaway, Lamar Smith, Mac Thornberry, Randy Neugebauer, Charles Stenholm, Larry Combest, the House Agriculture Committee, State Senator Robert Duncan, and State Representatives Carl Isett, Gary Walker and David Swinford. The experience gained during a semester as an intern has been invaluable to the students. Several former interns are now employed by the offices in which they worked.
