The J. W. Payton Scholarship was established by Thomas and Terry Payton in 2002. The
scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students majoring in the Davis College of
Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Preference is given to students from Southland,
Post and Garza County.
John W. Payton graduated from Texas Tech in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal
Production. As a student, he was a member of the Rodeo Association. He now owns and
operates J. W. Payton Farms in Post, Texas.
His son, Thomas, graduated from Tech with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science
and a master's in History. He is an assistant professor of social science at South
Plains College.
