B. Frank Rapstine Scholarship

The B. Frank Rapstine Scholarship was established in 2015 by Mary Rapstine Haynes to benefit students majoring in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

Mr. B. F. Rapstine graduated from Texas Tech University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. He was a very active student and was a member of the band, Agricultural Economics Association, Saddle Tramps, Sigma Nu, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Alpha Chi Omega.

Born in White Deer, Texas, Mr. Rapstine served his country with valor during World War II as a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy. He was a well-known businessman and civic leader in Amarillo, Texas, and an esteemed Texan who made notable contributions to his profession and to his various business ventures throughout his long and productive career.

The numerous important achievements of this exceptional individual contributed to the development and progress of his city. He was a research chemist for Phillips Petroleum Company from 1946 until 1948 before becoming owner and operator of the Golden Loaf Bakery. A contractor for construction and land development from 1950 until 1979, Mr. Rapstine had worked as an oil and gas business owner and petroleum landman since 1963. Licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance, he was co-owner of an insurance business from 1967 to 1978 and was a licensed securities dealer and real estate broker. He was also involved in mining and gemstones.

Mr. Rapstine gave freely of his time and abilities to the Amarillo Art Center, Carson County Square House Museum, and Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. He was deeply involved in community life as chairman of the building committee for Potter County Courts Building, a member of the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission, and the Potter County Grievance chairman. He also ably served on the Texas Constitutional Revision Committee.

A caring and giving Christian gentleman who lived his faith in his daily life, Mr. Rapstine was a member of Saint Hyacinth's Catholic Church. A devoted husband and father, he leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment that will be cherished by his family and those with whom he was associated.

Mr. Rapstine passed away February 24, 1993, at the age of 72. He had two daughters, Mary Rapstine Haynes and Bonnie B. Coffin, who graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics Education in 1971.
