Stubblefield, Probasco, Wylie Scholarship

The Stubblefield, Probasco and Wylie Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Loy Wylie in 1994. The scholarship is awarded to entering freshman qualifying as a Gold level Dean's Scholar with a major in agribusiness.

Loy Lane Wylie of Lubbock died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at his home. He was 74. Mr. Wylie was chairman and founder of Wylie Manufacturing Company in Petersburg, Texas and was in the cattle business.

He was born on June 5, 1929, in Petersburg, where he attended school and graduated in 1946. He received his business degree from Texas Tech in 1950. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, from 1950 to 1953. On Sept. 11, 1954, he married Glenna Mae Shinn in Lubbock. Mr. Wylie worked for Warren Petroleum Company in Ft. Worth until 1961, at which time he returned to Petersburg and eventually founded Wylie Manufacturing Co. Over the years, he developed many innovative products for the ag-chem industry, and Wylie Manufacturing became a major employer in Hale County.

Mr. Wylie was highly interested in land conservation, and spent much of his later life restoring ranchland at his cattle operation in Dickens County. He served on the boards of the Texas L.P. Gas Association, Texas Forestry Service, Texas Manufacturers Assistance Commission, and the Texas- Israeli Trade Commission. Mr. Wylie received two awards from the West Texas Ag-Chem Association, was named Petersburg Businessman of the Year, and received the Gerald W. Thomas Award for Outstanding Agriculturalist, Texas Tech College of Agriculture, in 1997.

Born in Apache, Oklahoma on August 11, 1931 to George Dewey and Edna Pauline Shinn, Glenna graduated from Paducah High School in 1948 and Texas Tech in 1952 with a BS in Secondary Education. She taught English in Lubbock and Petersburg after college. Glenna was an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity for over 60 years (Delta Psi chapter), and in 2009 achieved national recognition for her many years of philanthropy and service.

In 1964, Glenna and Loy established Wylie Manufacturing Company in Petersburg, now headquartered in Lubbock. Her many civic achievements included fundraising chairman for the American Heart Association and longtime service and leadership in the Lubbock Women's Club. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Glenna combined her love of reading and teaching through scholarship activities and support of Texas Tech. She demonstrated exceptional patriotism in political participation and issues.

Her hobbies included sewing and gardening. Glenna and her husband traveled extensively until his death in 2004. In 2012, she became an active resident at Carillion where she continued to enjoy spending time with many lifelong friends.

She is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Loy; her parents; and her sister, Jorene Hopkins of Dallas. Survivors include her two children and their families – Scot (Kim) Wylie of Lubbock, Paula Wylie (Andrew) Drury of Charleston, SC, including four granddaughters – Brooke (Joe) Coggiano of Pasadena, MD; Mary Caroline Wylie of Atlanta, GA; Callan (Seth) Betaharon of Rockville, MD; and Virginia (Tyler) Clark of Tyler. She also leaves three great-grandchildren – Cara Coggiano, Alex Betaharon, and Abby Betaharon.
