Bob and Helen Henard Scholarship in Range and Wildlife Management

The Bob and Helen Henard Scholarship in Range and Wildlife Management was established by family and friends of the Bob Henard Family in 1990. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students majoring in Range and Wildlife Management.

Mr. Robert (Bob) Henard was reared on a ranch near Denver City, Texas. Mrs. Helen Henard was reared near Wellington, Texas. Bob graduated from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Production. Bob and Helen ranched in Lea County, New Mexico (near Tatum) and in Yoacum County, Texas (near Plains) in partnership with Bob's brother Pat. Bob was affectionately known as "Uncle Tex" by this nephew and grandnephew who continue to manage the Henard Herford Ranches.

In addition to being a life-long rancher, Bob was the Lea County, New Mexico Extension Agent for many years, until the time of his death. As County Extension Agent, Bob's primary interest was in helping ranchers with management problems on their ranches. It was in the area of brush and weed control that he renewed his relationship with Texas Tech and became closely associated with the faculty in the Department of Natural Resources Management. He worked extensively with the Department's research program. But, he was more than a cooperator -- he was a personal friend and colleague with Drs. Bill Dahl and Ron Sosebee. It was through his efforts that the Department's brush and weed control program advanced quickly and became widely recognized and reputed throughout the Southwestern United States.

Bob was a charter member of the Advisory Board for the Department of Natural Resources Management (1982-1987). As a result of their long-time relationship with Texas Tech and the Department of Natural Resources Management Mr. and Mrs. Henard established this scholarship to promote management of natural resources among undergraduate students at Texas Tech. Mrs. Helen Henard continues to live in Lovington, New Mexico. The Henard's had two daughters. One died in an automobile accident in Lubbock, Texas in 1960, the second daughter lives in New Mexico.
