AFS Building Receives Design Awards

The Animal and Food Sciences building project won two national design awards. The American School and University magazine awarded the project an "Outstanding" citation in both the Adminsitrative Areas/Offices and Common Area categories of their 2006 Educational Interiors Showcase Competition.

Horse Judging Team Places at Congress

The Horse Judging Team received a 2nd place overall at the All American Quarter Horse Congress on October 11th in Columbus, Ohio. The team received a 1st place in the Team Reasons competition and 2nd place in Team Halter. The Horse Judging Team is coached by Kris Wilson and assistant, Will Golden.

The Region VI Collegiate Soils

The Plant and Soil Science Department Soils Judging Team placed first in both the team pit and team competition and won the team competition by 200 points at the 2006 Region VI Collegiate Soils Contest, hosted by the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. All the TTU team members were in the top ten individuals. Evan Maxwell, a Junior from Sudan, was high individual; Seth Sowder, a Sophmore from Sudan, was second high individual; Kathleeen Brosch, a Senior from Southland, was third high individual; and Cassidy Sooter, a Junior from Seminole, was ninth high individual. Three teams (including TTU) earned the opportunity to participate in the National Soils Contest, which will be hosted by Utah State University during March, 2007.

AAEC Faculty, Students Attend Beltwide Cotton Conferences

The 2006 Beltwide Cotton Conferences were held January 3 through January 6, 2006. Dr. Don Ethridge, Dr. Jeff Johnson, Dr. Phil Johnson, Dr. Vernon Lansford, Dr. Conrad Lyford, Dr. Jaime Malaga, Dr. Mohamadou Fadiga, Georgia Clark, and Mark Welch attended the conference. The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics had ten papers presented.

Texas Tech Rodeo Team On A Roll

The Texas Tech Rodeo Team is on a roll. Currently Hunter Cure, 2004 national champion, leads in steer wrestling and Adam Gray leads all the tie down ropers in the Southwest region on the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. In the 8th rodeo of the year, sponsored by West Texas A&M, Frank Phillips College, and Clarendon College, Ryan Gray was first in bareback riding, Luke Butterfield was second in saddle bronc on the first go round, and newcomer Romany Gordon placed second in barrel racing. At this time, the TTU men’s Rodeo Team is in third place with two more regular season intercollegiate rodeos left. The final two rodeos are at Tarleton State and Howard College. The top three individuals and the top two teams in each of 11 regions across the nation will compete in June for the national championship at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming.

Graduate Student Recognition

Max Batla, a Graduate Student in the Department of Plant and Soil Science, was recognized at the banquet of the Beltwide Cotton Conference in San Antonio, Texas. He tied for first place in the Master’s level competition.

Soil Science Scholarship Award

Charles Clark,  a Graduate Student in the Department of Plant and Soil Science, was the winner of the 2006 Soil Science Scholarship awarded by the Professional Soil Scientists Association of Texas. The scholarship will be officially awarded at the annual meeting February 1, 2006 in College Station.

Beltwide Cotton Conference

Apura Barman, a Graduate Student in the Department of Plant and Soil Science, received an award for Outstanding Oral Presentation at the Beltwide Cotton Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

New Faculty

Dr. Craig Bednarz will join the Department of Plant and Soil Science in Spring 2006 as an Associated Professor of Crop Physiology with a joint appointment with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Lubbock. Dr. Bednarz’s proven expertise in research and graduate education will greatly complement our cooperative effort to support this region’s cotton industry.

Texas Tech Rodeo Members and Alums Win Big at National Rodeo Finals

Texas Tech was well represented at the 2005 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (Professional) in Las Vegas December 2nd-11th. Wes Stevenson, a rodeo alum and Interdisciplinary Ag major, won first in the first of ten go-rounds in the bareback bronc riding event, placed 3rd in the average or aggregate after ten bucking horses, and finished 3rd in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. His total winnings were $92,379 over the last ten days and $167,834 for the year. Ryan Gray, a current Interdisciplinary Ag student, won two go-rounds out of ten in bareback riding and finished 6th in the world standings. Ryan won $46,189 at the finals and $140,606 for the year. Ryan is also the captain of the Texas Tech University Rodeo Team. Talina Byrd, a rodeo alum, placed 6th in the average; her earnings for the professional rodeo finals was $35,841 and $88,793 for the year. Kyle Bowers, the 2000 reserve national champion intercollegiate bareback rider, won $17,200 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and $123,748 for the year. This was Kyle’s second trip to the national finals. He is also the Canadian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association champion. Several media outlets including television, newspaper, radio, web pages, programs, and magazine articles mentioned the group as being from Texas Tech throughout their competitions this past year and during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. We are very proud of these Texas Tech rodeo students and alums and wish them continued success in their lives.
