Agricultural Education and Communications Graduate Students Recognition

A number of current and former graduate students in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications have been recognized for their scholastic contributions in 2004. These individuals include:

Agricultural Communications Students Recognized at National Competition

On July, 2004 at the National Agricultural Communicators in Agriculture (ACT) Conference, the following students in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications at Texas Tech University were recognized:

  1. Mary Jane Short - 4th place News Story;
  2. Katrina Waters - 4th place Short Feature;
  3. Jessica Bieber - 5th place Short Feature and 1st place Research Related Article;
  4. Meredith Andrews - 3rd place Page Layout; and
  5. Francie Hickman - 2nd place Video Production. The Texas Tech Chapter of ACT was recognized as Chapter of the Year in Fundraising. The local chapter is advised by Drs. Chad Davis, Cindy Akers, and David Doerfert.
 

Professor speaks on international cattle exportation issues

Dr. Carlos Villalobos spoke before the Cattle Friends of Parral and FIRA Agency Parral on proper preparation of cattle for exportation on November 5th, 2004. Dr. Villalobos was recognized for his valuable  participation in the 2nd Regional Cattle Forum, Chihuahua, Mexico.

 

Students Selected for Who’s Who

Billy Brock and Jessica Price have been honored by Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.  Billy is a senior Agricultural and Applied Economics major, and Jessica is a senior Agricultural and Applied Economics/General Business major.  Students are nominated based on their academic achievements as well as their contributions to the community.

 

W.R. Collier Receives Distinguished Service Award

At this year’s 32nd Annual Bankers Agricultural Credit Conference, the Distinguished Service Award went to W.R. Collier.  Mr. Collier graduated from Texas Technological College in 1961 with a degree in Agricultural Economics.  Since then, he has been a dedicated member of the banking community.  He took over as president of American State Bank in 1974, a title that he still holds today.

 

AAEC Graduate Student Assocation Departmental Pig Roast

Monday, November 29th, 2004

The Agricultural and Applied Economics Graduate Student Association held a Departmental Pig Roast on October 29th.  The Association recognized Dr. Roderick Rejesus at the Outstanding Faculty Member.  Erin Wheeler was presented with the award for Outstanding Masters Student, and Margarita Velandia was presented the award for Outstanding Ph.D. Student.

 

32nd Annual Bankers Agricultural Credit Conference

The 32nd Annual Bankers Agricultural Credit Conference was held November 12th at the International Cultural Center.  The conference, hosted by the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, was sponsored by McCoy Meyers and Associates, The Independent BankersBank, Texas Bankers Association, Independent Bankers Association of Texas, and the Thornton Agricultural Finance Institute.  The Conference featured several speakers addressing issues and topics of interest to agricultural bankers.

 

Texas Tech Hosts Agriculture and Natural Resources Awareness Week

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources hosted its annual Agriculture and Natural Resources Awareness Week Nov. 15-19. This year’s theme was "Agriculture and Natural Resources: Part of Your Everyday Life."  Planned events not only promoted agriculture and natural resources, but also activities within the college.

Monday, (Nov. 15)

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Department Research Highlights Exhibit in the Croslin Room of the Library.
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Landscape Architecture Display of students’ work at the Plant Science bldg.
  • 11 a.m. to noon
    College Symposium with Larry Combest, former chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, U.S. House of Representatives, in the United Spirit Arena. Combest will be speaking on "The Farm Bill, Where do we go from here."

Tuesday, (Nov. 16)

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Department Research Highlights Exhibit in the Croslin Room of the Library.
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Landscape Architecture Display of students’ work at the Plant Science bldg.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Ag-In-The-Bag, an outreach to elementary school students to teach them about agriculture, in the Livestock Arena.

* Tours of the new Animal and Food Sciences bldg. and Greenhouse/Horticultural Gardens will be available in the morning, starting in the Livestock arena.

Wednesday, (Nov. 17)

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Department Research Highlights Exhibit in the Croslin Room of the Library.
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Landscape Architecture Display of students’ work at the Plant Science bldg.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thursday, (Nov. 18)

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Department Research Highlights Exhibit in the Croslin Room of the Library.
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Landscape Architecture Display of students’ work at the Plant Science bldg.
  • 9:30 to 11 a.m.
    Seminar with Maria Navarro, Ph.D., -"Factors affecting participation of faculty and choice of strategies for the internalization of the agricultural curriculum" in the Ag Education bldg., room 116.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Ag-In-The-Bag, an outreach to elementary school students to teach them about agriculture and natural resources, in the Livestock Arena.
  • 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
    Ag Council Chili Cook-off at the Equestrian Center, off campus.
  • 7 p.m.
    Texas Tech Collegiate Rodeo in the Equestrian Center, off campus.

Friday, (Nov. 19)

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Department Research Highlights Exhibit in the Croslin Room of the Library.
  • 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Golf Tournament at the Rawls Golf Course.
    It’s limited to the first 84 golfers. The entry fee per person is $80 and per team is $320. This includes green fee, cart, range balls and lunch. All golfers will receive a complimentary towel and sleeve of golf balls. Proceeds will benefit the Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural Honor Society’s scholarship program.
