Four CASNR students bring home top-tier Terry Foundation Scholarships

Four standout students from Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources have been selected to receive prestigious Terry Foundation Scholarships, university officials announced today. Selected from a highly competitive applicant pool of incoming freshmen and transfer students who have demonstrate exceptional leadership, character, financial need and scholastic ability, the foundation provides four-year scholarships.  more »

AFS doctoral candidates earn fellowships with French food safety agency

Two doctoral students with Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences, Hattie Webb from Amarillo and Josh Ison from Batavia, Ohio, have earned the opportunity to do food safety research in France. The two standouts were recently honored with Chateaubriand Fellowships and will head to Maisons-Alfort (near Paris) in January to work on research projects in a collaborative effort between Texas Tech and a French food safety agency.  more »

Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team wins back-to-back nat’l championships

It was deja vu again this week for Texas Tech’s Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team. The standout team of animal science students once again won a national championship title at the 67th American Meat Science Association’s Reciprocal Meat Conference in Madison, Wis. Previously the Red Raiders have roasted the competition, winning the event in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2013.  more »

CASNR leadership set to revamp Dr. Bill Bennett Student Success Center programs

Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resource is in the process of completing an overhaul of its Student Success Center, a group of professionals in the Dean’s Office charged with recruiting and retaining the best students for the college. AFS professor appears on national business show to discuss food safety

Americans typically spend a relatively small amount of their disposable income on food, but that trend likely will change this summer, a Texas Tech food expert told Fox Business Network on Tuesday (May 20). Appearing on “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” Mindy Brashears, a professor of food microbiology and food safety, and director of Tech’s International Center for Food Industry Excellence, said that Americans should expect food prices to rise because of the current drought and other issues.  more »
