Basic horse management short course set for May 21

image image Basic horse management will be addressed Wednesday, May 21, as part of a short course at Texas Tech University. The 8-5 p.m. program in room 101 of the university’s animal and food sciences building is $40 a person with lunch and handout materials provided. (more…)

Beef-recall hearing today on USDA performance

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich said he will press for “greater transparency” in the meat industry today, in the wake of the largest beef recall in U.S. history. A subcommittee will meet at 1 p.m. to investigate the USDA’s ability to monitor the country’s slaughterhouses, to produce safe meat and treat animals humanely. (more…)

Katie Leigh with the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications has been elected a graduate student representative to the Association for International Agriculture and Extension Education’s Board of Directors. Texas Tech competes and places at Big Spring rodeo

Texas Tech senior animal and food sciences major Romany Gordon won second place in the finals and second overall in the barrel racing event, helping lead the Texas Tech women to the top of the regional standings at the Howard College Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southwest Region Rodeo last weekend. Senior AFS major named 2008-2009 Masked Rider

image image Texas Tech University announced April 18 that Ashley Hartzog accepted the reins to Midnight Matador, becoming the 2008-2009 Masked Rider. In donning the rider’s mask, Hartzog, a senior animal science major from Farwell, fulfills an ambition that took seed when she first saw the iconic mascot at a Red Raider football game when she was five years old.
