Helping Hand; SGA rejuvenates leadership with infusion of Reed Young

A senior agricultural and applied economics major has been elected to serve as external vice president for Texas Tech’s Student Government Association. During the 2012-2013 school year, Reed Young will be responsible for overseeing all programs of the Student Government Association.

“I wanted to become an officer because I really enjoy helping people,” said the Abilene native. “I think it’s important that students know that they have a voice. I get to represent those voices, which is a really rewarding feeling.”

Raised in a family of Red Raiders, Young said everyone in his family has attended Texas Tech and his heritage has instilled a passion for the Hub City and the university. During his time in office, Young hopes to increase campus safety, and build better relations between the university and the City of Lubbock.

In addition, he’s working to establish a non-voting member student seat on the Lubbock City Council, in order to help open a direct line of communication between the university and the city. “I’d encourage students who have ideas regarding CASNR to get in touch with me or the senators that represent them,” he added.

Previously, Young has been involved by serving in various positions in the student government association, as well as participating in the Agricultural Economics Club. Following graduation, he hopes to work in Austin either with the Texas Department of Agriculture or lobbying on behalf of agriculture.

“SGA is a great way to get involved on campus, and really understand how things work and what it takes to get things accomplished,” he said.
