Take Up the Rake; NRM Students Lend a Hand on Canyon Lakes Phase II Cleanup

A community-wide effort to help clean up Canyon Lakes #3, known by Guadalupe Barrio residents as “El Arroyo” roll out from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 20), and will include member of the Guadalupe Neighborhood Association, as well as a special group of students from Texas Tech’s Association for Natural Resource Scientists and Society for Conservation Biology.

The Tech students have been working with Guadalupe residents for the past two years, allowing them to help improve natural resources in Lubbock, obtain service hours for the organization, and network with community members.

“Last year we had a great time helping them clean,” said Jessica Kissner, a wildlife sciences graduate student and president for Tech’s Association of Natural Resource Scientists. “We brought in canoes, boots, and waders to clean up the lake system and were extremely successful.”

For almost five years Barrio residents and volunteers have worked hard to clear the area to the north of Aztlan Park, and are now continuing Phase II of this effort by cleaning from Ave. Q to the railroad truss bridge at Ave. J., the Iowa City, Ia. native said. Volunteers will trim trees, cut weeds, pick up debris, and work to make the area cleaner and safer for all to enjoy, program officials said. The cleanup activities will include breakfast, lunch and dinner service.
