Food Figures; National Food Day gets boost from Tech’s Block and Bridle Club
As a commitment to increasing agricultural literacy about our nation’s food and fiber, Texas Tech University’s Block and Bridle Club will celebrate National Food Day on Oct. 24. The event will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lubbock’s Market Street on the intersection of 50th Street and Indiana Ave.
“Texas Tech Block and Bridle members will be handing out brochures, free food samples and recipe ideas,” said Emily Jackson, a senior within Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences and the event organizer. “Students will be representing facets of the beef, swine and sheep industries.”
Food Day is a nationwide celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainable produced food, she said. The national event is coordinated by the Animal Agriculture Alliance, which is a national, non-profit organization that helps the public better understand modern animal agriculture’s importance to our quality of life.
By hosting this event in Lubbock, club members said that their goal is to explain to local consumers real agricultural production practices, while sharing their personal experiences growing up on farms and ranches. Block and Bridle is a student organization sought at promoting agriculture through providing educational material that lends consumers a better understanding of the diversified livestock industry around West Texas and the world.
