AFS graduate students receive 3-A SSI Student Travel Scholarship Awards

Three graduate students from Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences have been awarded travel scholarships from 3-A Sanitary Standards, a non-profit organization that focuses on enhancing product safety for consumers of food, beverages and pharmaceutical products.

Program officials note that Tech’s Alexandra Calle, Byron Chaves and Josh Ison will participate in 3-A’s SSI education program known as  “Achieving and Assuring Hygienic Design.” The sessions will be held May 12-15, 2015, at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Milwaukee. Only six awards were presented nationwide.

“Food safety is gaining attention across all segments of the food processing industry, especially as implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act moves ahead,” said Lou Beaudette, a director of the 3-A Sanitary Standards Inc. board and president of Admix Inc. in Manchester, NH. “Hygienic equipment design is a fundamental element of assuring food safety.”

Beaudette stressed that the education program gives future food industry professionals an opportunity to supplement their educational experience, and gain additional knowledge about hygienic equipment design, in addition to being able to network with a diverse group of industry leaders.

Recipients of the travel awards have demonstrated interest and commitment to food safety, as well as quality as a student enrolled full-time in a food technology, food science, dairy science or other closely related program.
