Bernard Rollin lecture, honors banquet highlight CASNR Awareness Week

Texas Tech University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources kicks off its annual ‘Agriculture and Natural Resources Awareness Week’ on Tuesday (Apr. 22) with a number of events and activities planned throughout the week to showcase the college’s departments and student organizations to the campus community.

One of the week’s highlights is a special lecture by one of the nation’s groundbreaking bioethicists, Bernard Rollin. The title of his presentation is, “Animal Rights as a Main Stream Phenomenon: Emerging Societal Ethics for Animals.” Rollin will deliver a special lecture at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (April 22) in Tech’s International Cultural Center.

Hosted by CASNR’s Agricultural Awareness Week, admission to the event is free and open to the public. The Colorado State University distinguished professor has lectured extensively on animal ethics, genetic engineering, animal pain, animal research, animal agriculture, veterinary ethics and other topics in bioethics and philosophy to a variety of audiences across the globe.

A new feature during the week will be the “HungerU” interactive mobile exhibit which aims to bring attention to the growing problem of world hunger. The exhibit will utilizes flat-screen displays, interactive kiosks and pedal tractors to encourage discussion. HungerU is operated by the Farm Journal Foundation, a nonprofit that reportedly aims to sustain agriculture’s ability to accommodate a rapidly growing population through education and empowerment.

  • Guest Speaker Bernard Rollin; 6 p.m. at International Cultural Center

Wednesday, April 23

  • HungerU Mobile Learning Center; AFS Livestock Arena
  • Popcorn Pop-In at Student Success Center
  • Ag Council hosts community service project with Lubbock Boys & Girls Club

Thursday, April 24

  • “Where’s Food, Without the Farmer?” Student Union Building (Free Speech Area)

Friday, April 25

  • Arbor Day, Texas Tech Campus
  • CASNR Honors Banquet at 6:30 p.m., Merket Alumni Center
