Top students, faculty highlight CASNR Honors Banquet at Merket Center

Outstanding students, staff and faculty from across Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources were honored Friday (Apr. 25) at its annual Honors Banquet at the Merket Alumni Center in Lubbock. Sponsored by the Ag Council, the event featured a variety of honors.

Recipients of the outstanding student departmental awards were:

  • Miranda Gillum; Agricultural and Applied Economics
  • Garrett Couts; Agricultural Education and Communications
  • Taylor Powell; Animal and Food Sciences
  • Gregory Byers; Landscape Architecture
  • Ashley Eckhardt; Natural Resources Management
  • Katherine Setterbo; Plant and Soil Science

Students with the highest academic achievement in their respective departments were:

  • Layne Norton; Agricultural and Applied Economics
  • Tori Hendon; Agricultural Education and Communications
  • Taylor Powell and Ian Schaefer; Animal and Food Science
  • Gregory Byers; Landscape Architecture
  • Sarah Savage; Natural Resources Management
  • Keith Frazer; Plant and Soil Science

“Aggie of the Month” recipients were:

  • Megan Nazworth (Pre-Vet Society)
  • Kevin Murnin (Block & Bridle)
  • David Underwood (Range, Wildlife & Fisheries)
  • Valerie Manning (Block & Bridle)
  • Garrett Couts (Collegiate FFA)
  • Heather Rode (Meat Science Association)
  • Elizabeth Terry (Collegiate FFA)

Separately, new Ag Council leaders for the 2014-2015 were recognized. They are Gretchen Lochte, president; Lauren Hamilton, vice president; Linsey Ogden, secretary; Deshea Hanagan, treasurer; and Haley Boatright, scribe. Student Government Senators for 2014-2015 were Jordan Vogel, Chase Vineyard and Hannah Cleveland.

Meanwhile, outstanding professor awards went to Ryan Williams for Fall 2013 and Jaime Malaga for Spring 2014. Outstanding staff members were Travis O’Quinn for Fall 2013 and Cindy McCullough for Spring 2014.

Ag Council members include the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow; Agricultural Economics Association; Agri-Techsans; Agronomy Club; Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity; Ambassadors for Agriculture; American Society of Landscape Architects; Block & Bridle; Collegiate 4-H; Collegiate FFA; Collegiate Horsemen’s Association; Equestrian Team; Food Science Club; Horse Judging Team; Livestock Judging Team; Meat Judging Team; Meat Science Association; Minorities in STEAM; Range, Wildlife & Fisheries Club; Rodeo Team; Sigma Alpha Sorority; Society for Conservation Biology; Soil Judging Team; Student Association for Fire Ecology – SAFE; Tech Pre-Vet Society; and Wool Evaluation Team.
