Agriculture degree programs featured on CNN.com

image imageThree of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ primary academic programs – packaging, food science and natural resources – were featured Wednesday on a leading national news Web site in an article on how unusual majors can get students a job in today’s stressful job market.

The story did not name specific universities, only general academic programs

The article on CNN.com, titled “10 unusual majors can get you these jobs,” provided a detailed look at 10 uncommon or overlooked majors and the jobs you can get with them.

“Here we are again, nearing the end of yet another summer and the start of a new school year. By now, you (hopefully) know where you’ll be attending college this fall, but do you know what you’ll study? The importance of choosing your college major has never been so important. Although the economy will have hopefully turned around by the time you graduate, nothing is certain.

“You’ll want to declare a major in something you not only enjoy and which interests you, but also in something that will come in handy when it comes to finding a job. While it’s tempting to choose a broad major like engineering, English or communications, it behooves you to get creative because you never know — an uncommon degree could put you in a great position to find a job in an emerging, unique or specialized field.”

Packaging: If you’re interested in a green career, this might be a good path to follow. Most things come with packaging for health and safety reasons, so it’s not likely this major will go away anytime soon. There are ways, however, to make packaging more functional and environmentally friendly, which is what packaging majors focus on. Food science: Perfect for self-proclaimed “foodies,” food science majors study the biology and chemistry behind food. They learn the basics of producing, transporting and preparing food, and learn what it takes to get a safe food product to consumers. Related careers: Agricultural and food scientists, flavor chemist, dietetic technicians, dietitians and nutritionists, industrial production managers

“Natural resources: Another green college major, natural resources majors learn how to protect and preserve natural resources and how to commercially use natural resources like oil, trees, water, animals and plants with the least environmental impact. Related careers: Conservation scientists; environmental educators; environmental scientists; foresters and forestry technicians; park rangers; preserve managers.”

Rounding out CNN’s ‘Top 10’ unusual majors were family and consumer sciences, linguistics majors, language studies, recreation management, criminology, social work, urban studies, and gerontology.

CNN, the cable news channel of record, has had great success on the Web. Using page views as a metric, Nielsen ranked CNN.com as the No. 1 current events and global news Web site last year, with a monthly average of 1.7 billion hits – half a billion views more than its nearest competitor, MSNBC.com.

Department of Animal and Food Sciences – Packaging (Meat Science) Program

Chance Brooks, an associate professor with the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and International Center for Food Industry Excellence, is one of the department’s nationally recognized leaders in packaging. His research has focused on adding value to beef products through product enhancement, improved uniformity and consistency, manipulation of underutilized muscles for novel steak and roast cuts, and application of management schemes to maximize efficiency and palatability.

In addition Brooks’ research has explored the effects of package type and package characteristics on the shelf life and safety of meat products. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from Texas Tech. His doctorate in animal science is from Texas A&M University.

Department of Animal and Food Sciences – Food Science Program

CASNR’s food science programs provide the basic course work for a comprehensive background in the processing and preservation of foods. Food science graduates may be employed in areas concerned with food systems management, the design and development of new food products, strategies for quality assurance and food safety, or research in the basic constituents of food.

One of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences’ featured research programs is the International Center for Food Industry Excellence http://www.icfie.com/. Led by internationally recognized researcher Dr. Mindy Brashears, its purpose is to conduct systematic development and evaluation of food products from farm to table and to address the food-related concerns of society.

The center’s scientists provide a multidisciplinary federal- and state-supported program dedicated to improving the safety, quality, utility, and acceptance of food innovations and resultant food products. A key component involves creating a mechanism by which food innovations can be evaluated from the agricultural production, manufacturing, food service, and retail perspectives.

Department of Natural Resources Management – Natural Resources Program

CASNR’s natural resources programs have a broad but unified mission: to provide quality instruction to its students, conduct top-quality research in the broad field of natural resources management, and offer outstanding service to the public at large. The mission is accomplished by conducting state-of-the-art research in range, wildlife, and fisheries sciences and by disseminating this information to the program’s students and community.

The interests of the faculty span a wide range of topics and multiple levels of ecological organization, a diversity that helps produce a cohesive understanding and a detailed appreciation of fundamental ecological processes and the roles humans play in them.

Four major areas of scholarship are represented in the research of the department’s faculty: range management, wildlife management, fisheries management, and conservation biology. These areas of scholarship often overlap, and they collaboratively work to explore the linkages among them. Faculty from other departments often add to the strength of these programs.
