Alex Avery lecture, honors banquet highlight CASNR Awareness Week
Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources kicks off its annual "Agriculture and Natural Resources Awareness Week" on Sunday (April 22) with a number of events and activities planned throughout the week to showcase the college's departments and student organizations to the campus community. Featured events include the Ag Olympics, Student Ag Council's Boots to Suits program and the CASNR Honors Banquet.
One of the week's highlights is a special lecture by the Hudson Institute's Alex Avery, who serves as the Washington D.C.-based policy research organization's director of research and education in the group's Center for Global Food Issues. Avery, who is the author of "The Truth About Organic Foods," "Scaring Consumers Away from Good Health" and "Farming to Sustain the Environment," will deliver a special lecture at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (April 24) in the Texas Tech Student Union Building's Matador Room.
Hosted by CASNR's Agricultural Awareness Week, admission to the event is free and open to the public. Prior to joining the Hudson Institute in 1994, Avery was a McKnight research fellow at Purdue University, where he worked on a team developing drought- and disease-resistant sorghum varieties for sub-Saharan Africa. His articles have appeared in many publications, including USA Today Magazine and The Washington Times.
In addition, CASNR's Ambassadors for Agriculture will coordinate a display window in the Student Union Building that will be up all week. The Ambassadors are also designing table tents that will be around campus in the dining areas. There will be trivia each day on the CASNR Facebook page with prizes given away.
