Texas Cattle Feeders Association awards scholarships to AFS grad students
Three graduate students from Texas Tech's Department of Animal and Food Sciences have been awarded Texas Cattle Feeders Association Education Foundation Scholarships. This year's winners included Tyson Brown of Wiley, Colo., Elizabeth Domby of Lamar, Colo., and Andrew Hosford of Willits, Calif.
The quality of this year's applicants was exceptional, said Kristen Brown, communications manager for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. The association represents the cattle feeding industry in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
Known as cattle feeding country, the area is the largest cattle feeding region in United States, and annually markets more than 7 million fed cattle or about 30 percent of the nation's fed cattle production.
The scholarships were presented to five graduate students involved in research projects focusing on cattle feeding. Working through their 'Consortium for Cattle Feeding and Environmental Sciences,' the students applied for the scholarships through their major professors.
Amarillo-based TCFA officials noted that the consortium is comprised of faculty from Texas Tech, Texas A&M University-College Station, West Texas A&M University-Canyon, USDA research facilities at Bushland, and New Mexico State University. Other scholarship recipients receiving awards this year included Kevin Heflin and Justin Wallace of West Texas A&M.
"It's been said that the only constant in the cattle industry is change, so it is vital that we stay on the cutting edge with research," Brown said. "It's exciting and encouraging to award scholarships to hardworking individuals who have an interest in fed cattle research."
