Rodeo Update: Calf Roping Highlights Weekend's Vernon College Rodeo
Led by a championship roping performance from an agriculture economics major from Snyder, Texas Tech's rodeo team had a strong outing this weekend at the Vernon College Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo in Wichita Falls.
In the rodeo's calf roping event, Tech senior Garrett Hale placed second in go round one, second in the finals, and, eventually, taking the overall calf roping championship during a rain and mud-soaked competition. Hale and his partner, Stetson Corman, a freshman agriculture economics major from Burlington, Colo., also placed seventh overall in team roping.
In addition, Tech's rodeo team had a pair of barrel racers qualify for the 'Top 10' finals. Shelby Janssen a junior general studies major from Austin, Minn., won first in go round one with a blistering time of 17.54 seconds, the fastest among the rodeo's 125 barrel racers. Carley Richardson, a senior animal and food sciences major from Pampa, qualified in eighth place going into the barrel racing finals.
Other prominent performances included:
- Breakaway Calf Roping: Chealsa Brown, a senior mathematics major from Big Sandy, Mon., third in go round one and eighth overall
- Saddle Bronc Riding: Treyson Antonick, a sophomore animal and food sciences major from Henderson, fifth in the finals and fifth overall
Separately, the 63rd annual Texas Tech Rodeo is getting ready to start out of the gate at 7 p.m. Oct. 18-20 at the university's equestrian center indoor arena in Lubbock. Rodeo students will be selling rodeo tickets for half price ($5) next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (Oct. 15-17) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Texas Tech's Student Union Building.
Other pre-sale locations include $8 tickets at Lubbock's Gebos and Dollar Western Wear. Tickets can also be purchased for $10 at the equestrian center's front gate on Oct. 18-20. Children under six-years-old are admitted free to the rodeo events.
Texas Tech's rodeo teams are scheduled to compete in several more rodeos during the spring semester. According to Tech Rodeo Coach Chris Guay, their goal is to win a regional championship which will qualify them for the College National Finals Rodeo next summer. The top two teams and top three individuals in the region automatically advance to nationals in Casper, Wyoming.
