Robert Paine

Areas of Research
Human skeletal biology, forensic anthropology, histology of bone, paleopathology, human evolution, primate behavior & morphology.
Current Research Interest:
1. Histological application of evaluating skeletal lesions, specifically in the case of micro nutrient deficiencies seen in prehistoric populations.
2. Trauma analysis of the Samnites from Alfedena Iron Age necropolois,Italy.
3. Macro and micro anatomical analysis of skeletal remains from the Raymond Dart skeletal collection, South Africa. Specific focus is on bone remodeling related to pellagra, diet deficiency.

Grave goods from a Roman period tomb, Elaiussa Sebaste, Turkey.
Unassociated human remains from 5-6th century Byzantine church, Elaiussa Sebaste, Turkey.
Dr. Paine with an Iron Age Samnite male skull. This individual has an extreme dislocation of both mandibular joints, cause by blunt force to the jaw. The Samnites are a Latin people from the Abruzzi region of central Italy. This burial dates from the 6-5 centuries BC.
Applied Work:
Forensic anthropology consultant for the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office and surrounding west Texas counties. Lecturer for the Annual Mediolegal Death Investigation Seminar, Lubbock Texas, 1995-2000.
Member of the Advisory Board for The International Forensic Sciences Institue of the Texas Tech University System, May 2002-present.
Director for the Forensic Sciences minor.
Teaching Interests: At the undergraduate level, I have been actively involved in the development and teaching of a large enrollment (@180 students/semester) 4 hour credit introduction to biological anthropology course that serves as part of the general Arts and Sciences curriculum. As of the Fall 2003, I am teaching a lecture course “Forensic Anthropology” as part of a recently developed minor in forensic sciences, with an enrollment of 50+ students. All of my upper level undergraduate courses (Skeletal biology & forensic techniques, paleopathology, human evolution, & primate behavior) provide students with intensive writing and critical thinking experiences.
