Coordinator's Report

Coordinator: Ed Check

I can't believe that my six years as an officer in Social Caucus is about to end. Thanks to everyone who helped me throughout these years. Thought I would quickly bring you up-to-date on some issues that are of concern to caucus members.

First, if you haven't already, please renew your membership. We have streamlined the membership process so that memberships now run from January to December. That way, you receive a copy of the journal the year you are registered as a member, not the following year. There have been problems concerning memberships in the past. Keep in mind that only members in good standing receive a copy of the journal. Inform us if you decide not to renew your membership.

Second, I would like to wish Karen Keifer-Boyd and the other officers all the best as they continue the wonderful tradition of the caucus. If anyone is interested in becoming more involved with the caucus, please email Karen (karenkb@ttu.edu). We continue to welcome old and new members to become involved in our newsletter, as journal reviewers, future board members, as NAEA News columnists, and with producing an exciting itinerary (i.e., deciding social events) at the annual conference. From time to time, papers get lost in multitudes of shuffles. If you volunteered to do something for the caucus and have not been contacted to date, please drop Karen a line with your request, suggestion or contribution.

Third, our newsletter. Treasurer Hank Foreman assured me that all members were apprised that our newsletter is now on-line. Members who do not have access to the Internet were asked to notify us and we would send them a hard copy. Unfortunately, all this has meant that this past year has not been a good year for communication. It's been a rather quiet year. Many members tried to access the website when our server was down. Internal problems at Tech created other delays in getting everything up and going. I for one, wouldn't mind getting a hard copy of the newsletter. I always enjoyed reading it from cover to cover. It was part of the social caucus experience for me.

Fourth. Website. Many thanks go to Karen Keifer-Boyd for her dedication and insight into creating, developing and maintaining the site.

Fifth. The Journal. If your school library does not subscribe to the caucus journal--how about talking to your library resource committee person or a librarian about ordering a subscription to the journal. It is an incredible value--both financially and educationally. The institutional rate is incredibly low. That is one positive way you can spread our message at your school and expose students to our excellent journal.

And finally. It's an exciting time to be a member--new issues, theories and debates. This has always been our caucus and it is usually as good as the participation level of our members. Please consider or reconsider getting involved in the caucus. Take some time to look over our conference itinerary--exciting and provocative as usual.

Hope you all have a successful conference.

Respectfully submitted, Ed Check
