March 1999

Coordinator-elect's Report on the Conference Proposal Process:

As coordinator-elect I reviewed and recommended CSTAE sessions for the 1999 NAEA Conference in Washington DC, March 24-28. There were 20 proposals submitted this year and Ron Jones, NAEA conference program coordinator, asked that I select only 15 for the 1999 Convention. In 1998 there were 28 proposals submitted and 20 sessions allowed. In 1997 there were 32 submissions and 23 selected.

I recommended highlighting Grace Deniston's presentation, "The Nature of Dialogue as Pedagogy" since this is the CSTAE conference and journal theme for 1999. Her presentation lays the foundation for the other CSTAE presentations of which 10 of the 20 directly related to the 1999 CSTAE theme of "Dialogue as an Empowered Pedagogy."

Of the 20 proposals with the need to limit to 15 there were only 2 that I felt I could recommend not accepting. One was a duplicate of a session and the other was one of two sent by the same presenter. The remaining 18 proposals, I believe, will be high quality, timely, and important presentations.

However to limit to 15 sessions as required by the conference coordinator, I selected three that I used the "not accept" option by not marking anything and instead placed a note on them asking the coordinator to pair them with other presentations. I identified 4 presentations that I recommended pairing with 4 others and each be given only 25 minutes. Only one in this group of the 20 had asked for 25 minutes. I know the presenters and their work and hoped that they would be willing to change to 25 min. paired with who I recommended for each. Look to the article in this issue of the newsletter that lists the 1999 CSTAE sessions to see how my requests were accomodated.

Sincerely,

Karen Keifer-Boyd (CSTAE conference proposal reader for 1999)
