Carol ErlerCarolyn Erler, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Visual Studies

Dr. Carolyn Erler joins the Visual Studies faculty during fall 2007. Professor Erler received her Ph.D. from Florida State University after teaching for eight years at the College of St. Catherine in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where she specialized in visual literacy. Her research focuses on the Beehive Design Collective, a graphic arts group whose political posters are well known among anti-globalization activists in Central America, South American, and parts of the global north. She has taught critical thinking, visual studies, and media literacy in the Florida public schools, as well as at the experimental Grassroots Free School in Tallahassee, Florida. She is the author of numerous articles on topics ranging from visual rhetoric in video games to the tactical usage of performance, media, and visual culture by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a migrant farm labor group based in south Florida. In addition, she is a member of the National Art Education Association, the Texas Art Education Association, and the Coalition of Essential Schools.
