Master of Art Education Program

The Master of Art Education (MAE) Program supports practicing teachers with contemporary social theories and strategies that strengthen their classroom, studio practice and research in relation to art and visual culture.

The MAE degree program is composed of a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate hours including:

  • 12 semester hours of art education courses (research core course & 3 others as offered)
  • 9-12 semester hours of related art courses (i.e., studio & art history)
  • 6-9 semester hours as a minor (taken inside or outside the School of Art)
  • 6 semester hours of either:
  • thesis(for those planning to pursue a Ph.D. and publication) Art 6000
  • professional report (for those interested in developing a project) Art 6001
  • artistic/studio problem (for those defining artistic problems within or across media) Art 6002

Art education, art history and studio courses at the Junction Center are held Sunday night through Friday noon from early June to mid July. The weekly requirement in Junction is 20 in-class hours and 25 additional hours of individual work for one credit hour. There are excellent printmaking, ceramic, and painting studio facilities in a rural hill setting along the Llano River.

For the studio component of 3 courses one would need to take courses taught by School of Art faculty either at the main campus in Lubbock or the Junction Center.  The minor of 2 or 3 courses could be taken online and/or 2 of those courses may be transferred from a university near you.

The capstone of either thesis, project, or exhibition could be completed at a distance via advisor and committee electronic communication with 1 or 2 visits to campus for the proposal presentation (this could also be done via interactive television if you have a site you could use close by if you could not travel) and final presentation (again interactive TV is a possibility). Exhibition location can be negotiated if the committee of 3 is willing and able to travel to the site.
