David Schoerner’s All my photographs as of 10/29/2010 photocopied in the order they are listed on my website traces his artistic output from image making to web publication to publication in book form to this exhibition which displays those book pages on the gallery wall. In this gallery viewing, we experience black and white laser prints of images downloaded from his website.
Privileging the forms of delivery over the specific content of any one image, Schoerner encourages viewers to consider methods of distribution, and the replication and archiving of images, and their affects. In proclaiming this difference in re-presentation, previous contextual requirements (original artwork in the studio, gallery, or collection, web images sorted into projects, and book pages) are diminished.
This paring down to rough laser prints and re-contextualization emphasizes the viewer’s role in contextualizing the perceived content of each image. Re-producing pictures of persons, landscapes, store windows, and the rest of his photographic output in this new context, Schoerner joins a growing movement of artists showing ambiguously associated images without words. The aboutness of each image, the depicted elements, and their relationships to each other, are allowed to float, interrelate, and conflict freely.
David Schoerner (b. 1984) holds a BFA from Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA, and is the founder and publisher of Hassla Books.
