Visual Studies
Visual Studies at Texas Tech University is an anti-bias/social justice, field-based program. Throughout their BFA program, students gain multiple and diverse teaching experiences in impoverished, alternative, community-based or school settings including teaching incarcerated youth. The critically-based Master of Art Education program offers three tracks: studio track for graduates who want to develop as artists/educators, the professional project for teachers investigating/documenting innovative classroom issues/practices, and thesis for future Ph.D.s.  The MAE can be completed via online courses and summer study at the Texas Tech Center at Junction. Our cross-disciplinary Ph.D. program bridges academic research and studio production, producing dissertations on topics such as investigating the possibilities of creating art programs/outreach on an Apache reservation, investigating the influences of Chinese kiln deities on United States art education practices, and border identities via contemporary commercial signifiers. BFA, MAE and Ph.D. students are trained as advocates for anti-bias/social justice ideologies/strategies utilizing contemporary arts and education theories (e.g., feminist, anti-bias, anti-colonial, gendered, queer, trauma/recovery, social class/poverty/working class/middle class, race, aging, peace, differing abilities, radical teaching, and general rethinking of school cultures).
